hello everyone,

my younger sister and I just finished driving cross country over the past 5 days.

on the first day, after about 400 miles, my 5.0L V8 1997 Explorer (155k) would begin to lurch or kick, especially going uphill. I found a burnt out spark plug wire and replaced it, and we were on our way.

Apparently, it wasn't the wire, but the opportunity to cool off that helped, because the next day the same lurching probelm resurfaced. it has come and gone over 4 days with the following symptoms/conditions:

* when it gets over 82, the car is more likely to lurch/kick and then want to shut off. I would lurch into a rest area, and by the time I made it to a parking spot, would die out and stall. Seems electrical, or like its running out of gas. we wait anywhere from 10m - 45min and the car starts right up and runs strong.

* the CEL has never come on once. there are no strange sounds or odors.

* when we drove at night, and it was 55-75, there was never any issues and we could bang out like 500 miles. once the temperature got up and hot, problems start.

* replaced fuel filter and air filter. new spark plug boots and wires. bought 87 or 89 gas in case of crappy fuel.

a friend said maybe its the thermostat? i am also thinking fuel pump?

I'm thinking fuel pump as well. I remember hearing a story about the 68' Camaro. The exhaust system would heat up the fuel up so that if you turned the vehicle off it would not start until the pump cooled down. That has been a while ago so I might have it wrong, but still fuel pump is my guess.
