M5OD-R1 clutch problems

I have always had a problem with the hydraulic clutch system in my 1994 Explorer. It usually only shows up once it starts getting warm out, and it started again today. Anytime the vehicle gets hot, such as on a 90* day with the A/C running, it starts getting hard to shift. Even with the clutch pedal down, it won't go into gear. I have to shut the motor off to get it in gear and then start it again.

It has ALWAYS done this since I've had it. The clutch has been replaced twice and the hydraulic system bled I don't know how many times now. Am I going to have to pull the transmission and transfer case off and bench bleed the slave cylinder myself?

Any other input would be greatly welcomed.

It does sound like the slave, and that's a very common failure part in these transmissions.

Did you replace it in either of the past clutch jobs?
 






The slave was replaced with the first clutch about 35,000 miles ago. I re-used it for the recent clutch (about 8 months ago). The symptoms have been the same with all three clutches that have been in it since I got it.

A GOOD bleeding is the only thing I can think of to solve it, but I don't want to have to pull the tranny off!
 






Search this forum for bleeding the slave. It's been written up a few times, and has some good tips and tricks to incorporate.

Yes, the M5OD-R1 Mazda 5-speed. Ceck out the transmission forum.

BTW, I'm on Centerforce clutch #3, but my SAS and better gearing are comin' right up!
 






Pilot Bearing

Would a bad pilot bearing also make it difficult to shift into 1st and Reverse?

Pilot bearing is a good bet!
The pilot bearing may not be spining freely and causing the input shaft to keep speed with the engine, with or without the clutch engaged.
 






Does the pedal feel any different when this problem starts? (like it's softer or goes to the floor easier)?

I would suspect the clutch master cyl if so (and it's not leaking). If not, then the pilot bearing is definitely a good possibility.
