what exactly is it that the maf sensor does? i was on a two hour drive and my check engine light would come on, then come off every couple of minutes. i arrived and the autoshop couldnt seem to find a connection to test the computer. she also said she tightened some vacuum hoses and that might help. it didnt help but i pulled over on the way home and the whole intake hose leading in to the sensor was almost off. i put it on and it seemed to work for a while but now the light is on and off. any ideas as to why this sensor might be coming on and off ?

MAF = Mass Air Flow - this sensor measures the quantity (mass) of air coming into the engine. The result is used by the PCM (computer) to adjust fuel injector timing to get the Air/Fuel (aka fuel mixture) ratio.

Try making sure that intake tubing is secure (no leaks, this throws off the calculation of A/F because of additional, unmetered air) and then try to reset the system by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting it.
