90 Bronco II 4.0L/A4LD/
Sorry for my ignorance, I've seen this reference somewhere but can't remember where exactly I saw it...

I have a first gen 4.0L in my Bronco 2, I've read (somewhere) on the forum of upgrading the MAF to a larger version... I can't remember if the donor vehicle was from a 96 5.0L or a 4.0L motor. Can someone help settle my confusion...

Thanks to those who gave me a hand with retrofitting the 4.0L to my Bronco II. The engine and trans are running great now that my exhaust is connected properly all the way through.

One other question, When I shift into reverse... it's very harsh, is there an adjustment I can make to ease the harshness?

Thanks,

Harl

you can grab the maf from a 5.0 vehicle, although I think there are some other engines that will work also. I think the 4.0 OHV and SOHC have the same MAF.

I grabbed a plastic one from a 5.0 mounty if I remember correctly.

i used the bigger housing from a 94 crown vic 4.6L

Once I settle on the MAF I need... I'll need the appropriate connection tube between the MAF and the TB. I noted the 2nd gen OHV engine has a larger diameter connecting tube then the first gen. Given the tube might be taller then the original, I believe I can flatten it to fit using a little heat. Besides with the Taurus dual electric fans, I will most likely have more room to fit a larger tube.... I hope

So does anyone know for sure if a second gen 4.0L MAF is the one I need.

Thanks,

harl

i used the stock 4.0 intake tube with the 5.0 MAF. i had to wrestle it a bit, but it's nice and snug now.

I measured the MAF I got off a 96 4.0L. The inside diameter measurement 81mm in and 75mm out... I just might have the correct one already. I noticed the Ebay MAF that Jd4242 offered up has a 70mm ID and that's off a 93 5.L Mustang, could the one I have be bigger then that one?

Thanks for the heads up on using the OE MAF electronics.

I'm going to try the connecting tube that came with this MAF (96 4L X), by looking at the OD of the tube from the 96, the volume of air should be greater buy as much as half 1/2 over what I have currently on my rig. I should disconnect the PCM and let the brain figure out the new configuration from zero... don't ya think?

i dont know how you are measuring it but there is a huge difference in a 4.0 and the stang 70mm.i haven't measured mine and can tomorrow if you want, thats the one i run on ebay.i think the ex 5.0 isnt as big as the stangs either.the stock 5.0 is 58mm and flow 60cfm where the 70mm flows 815cfm.http://www.mustang-tech.org/wiki/94-95_Mustangs_Electrical_MAF
you will not need anything over 70 unless you are doing force induction because you can only get a 66mm tb
here is a pic of the two the top is 4.0 and the bottom is stangs and last is a pic of the 70mm ontop of the stock one

did you pull the tube off both sides of the maf when you measured it because on side is way bigger than the side that connects to the tube and not the box.that 75mm sounds like the outside dia off the side you need to measure the inside of.how did you get a larger inside than out side?

Sorry for the confusion... the "in and out" I was referring to meant the ends of the aluminum tube. One end measured 81mm and other end measured 75mm both are Inside Diameter. The MAF from the 96 X has similar post through the center like the one in your picture.

But I still believe I can make the larger intake tube fit

O ok gotca.it might be off an 5.0 Explorer then.it really doesn't make a huge difference anyways unless you have a mod tb or a bbk or headwork.

What I'm looking for is better low end torque for off road. I'm also installing a Magna flow exhaust starting with the Cat and working back. They both should be mutually beneficial.

I'll let you know how it goes....

thanks,

Harl

On closer examination of the paper work that came with the MAF I bought, I find that the MAF came off a 3.8L Mustang. The bolt holes are the same on the air box. Does anyone have any experience with a MAF from a 3.8L and will it work on my 1st gen 4L?

Harl

I don't have any experience but if you have it, go ahead and pull the stock MAF off and compare the two. If the stang MAF is bigger and the bolt holes all line up, then go ahead and put it on!

yea i agree, use your stock electronics though if they fit

The screw holes are exactly the same on the horn and the MAF's black box ... the 3.8 MAF electronics have a totally different plug though.... I have another MAF coming from a 91, should work...... Not even sure if I need it a new MAF black box any longer, the truck is running great once moving. Idling after start up can be a little funky but she always starts within the first couple a cranks.

I fiddled with the relays under the hood tonight.. I changed around the fuel pump relay and the ABS relay. And it ran better...! hmmm  There were different numbers on both relays . When I swapped the 4.0 into my B2, I took out all the fuses and relays to clean the contacts, not realizing there were three different relays.

Does anyone know what the sequence is and where the relays are supposed to go in the big relay and fuse box under the hood?

thanks,

harl
