A little while ago my X was pinging slightly and I thought I would possibly fix it by cleaning the MAF. I took the sensor out of the top and cleaned it and put it back in and it hasn't run right since. The CEL randomly comes on and it won't stay running when cold. I have to keep giving it gas or it will die.

I tried to pull the codes myself but after putting in the jumper wire as shown in the online diagrams I get no flashes from the CEL or a test light. Im gonna buy a cheap tester somewhere tonight and might go ahead and get a MAFS since thats when the problems really started. It appears as though I have to buy the whole thing though and not just he part with the connector. Anyone know where I can buy just he sensor?

I wouldn't ASSUME that the MAF was the cause......of the poor running condition of the vehicle, before or after.

Pull the codes first.

As for the initial, "ping." I'd would have been looking at the "knock sensor" or for an "A/F-mixture-lean" conditions.........but, really pull the codes. It might even point to O2 sensors.

In the mean time, if you feel that you want to clean more stuff:

How did you clean it? If you used electrical spray contact cleaner, you did good.

If you used other spray cleaners that leave a residue, that could make the problem worse.:thumbdwn:

Also after cleaning or during, unhook the negative battery cable to reset the ECU. If you do not reset it after cleaning, the ECU mapping will get confused and run poorly.

Ok so tonight I got the code reader. I pulled codes 66 / 67 / 95

66 = MAF I agree
67 = AC well I have it unplugged so I understand that one too
95 = Fuel pump monitor

I guess between the 66 and 95 that would explain my issues. And yes I used electrical cleaner to clean the MAF

Thats good....you got the codes.

So, as you already KNOW, cleaning a MAF doesn't always work.....sometimes you just gotta get a new one. Not saying that it will cure all the problems.

PS.....I haven't purchased a CODE READER for my 1st Gen. (EEC IV)......been lucky w/ my vehicle thus far.

So, Pls give me some advice: What brand and model did you buy? How much?? Is it a easy to use and understand???

From the Ranger Station web site:

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/2digitcodes.html

#66

Vane Air Flow (VAF) or Mass Air Flow (MAF) signal low - VAF MAF
Transmission Oil Temperature (TOT) signal low (possibly grounded) - Transmissions

#95

(O) Fuel pump: open, bad ground or always on - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits
(R) AIR not Diverting (AIRD) - Air Injection
(M) Possible bad fuel pump ground or open between fuel pump and pin 8 at PCM (Fuel Pump Monitor signal) - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits

Differences in test mode noted as:
(O) = Key On Engine Off test
(R) = Key On Engine Running test
(M) = Memory code

Hope it helps. Keep us posted with your progress.

I bought the scanner from Autozone for $29.99. Sorry don't have the name of it
Yes its easy to use and understand but I only bought this after failing to find the self test start wire so I could do my own test with out buying the tool. After buying the tool I found that I still needed to find this missing wire. After some more searching I found it stuck up in a hidden place. After attaching the two plugs to the scanner you can either watch the LED on the scan tool or watch the CEL. Its pretty simple from there you just count the flashes.

If I had to do again I can say don't buy the tool and just jumper the two connections yourself.

Too all the members who said take it to autozone/advanced auto/"whatever place* to get tested for free I say this only works if you have an OBDII computer. Two places flat out told me NO we don't test OBDI and the other two I tried keep looking under the dash and wouldn't look under the hood at my request.

Yes I will keep you posted. I found a sensor on ebay but before I buy one im going to make sure everything is plugged up correct from when I took it apart and make sure I all that is good. Im sure I will end up buying one though

Yup, I guess that won't work for me, either.

I didn't want to buy one of those tools that make you count the flashes.......seems like, "Why buy the tool, when you can do it w/ a jumper wire?"

Now, if the entire number was displayed.......I guess......one of those higher priced tools that will do both the EEC IV and OBD II is in order......ACTRON? Guess I'll have to start saving up for it.

Update:

I took it in the pants tonight and replaced the MAFS. There went a nice $100  Well anyway the X runs stronger and smoother than it ever has in the 3 years ive had it. Plus no more ping with throttle
