Sup people,

Last week I had a magnaflow exhaust put in and I was going to get the pipes as well. When I told the dude that I did not want it to be real loud, he suggested keeping the stock pipes and that I wouldn't lose any performance. So whats the real deal? Have I lost major performance gains? By the way I have a v8 5.0.....

did you get a dual out muffler or a single out?

It sounds as if you got a single outlet because you used the stock pipes. Yes, you lost performance, well didn't really loose, you just didn't gain anything - except for sound which will probably be quiet with the stock pipes which I guess thats what you want.

They should have used about a 3" pipe for a single out Magnaflow muffler.

I know guys that run duals on the 5.0 and use only 2.5" or 3" pipes, nothing smaller. And they got noticeable gains and mpg increase, plus a bad ass sound; especially the dual 3" pipe one.

Magnaflows kick ass by the way:thumbsup:

i was planning on 2 1/4 duel out so i dont lose torque

trust me you will not lose torque. For some reason people think you end up losing everything in the low end. If anything at all you may lose like 2lb-ft of torque. It's not noticeable, my friend is running dual 3" pipes on his Explorer 5.0 with no lose of torque at all, it's stronger at every rpm - from idle to redline.
2.5 - 3" is perfect for duals on a 5.0, most go with 2.5 as the sound is throatier on the larger pipes and you'll see a more noticeable increase in power, mpg - if you can keep you foot off the gas to hear the sweet sound;)

A guy just explained this objective on another post.

I think with the 5.0 engine, this won't be as much of a concern with you. I bet that a 2.5 inch pipe will not make a noticeable loss in torque and free up more air for HP.

see - Jason agrees:D , between 2.5" to 3" for duals is perfect on a 5.0, if your going single I'm not sure but I think most people use a 3" single pipe.

You'll sound better and free up some more power if you go to the 2.5" or 3" over the 2.25" pipes. Thats pretty small, as a kid in my high school ran dual 2.5" pipes on his 96' Explorer ohv 4.0, and he also had no problem with loss of torque, his definitley sounded better than mine and I have a single out 40 series with a 2.5" pipe, he has a dual out 40 series.

How about for a 4.0 SOHC - I read somewhere that 2.25 for a single out is optimum. Any thoughts?

Actually I feel that for the SOHC watever is .25" larger than stock is optimal. Stock, some are 2" and some are 2.25". So 2.5" is ok.

I guess a 2.5" for a single out on a sohc, not sure, but my ohv V6 has a 2.5" single out.

I'm better with V8's though, but I would guess it would be fine if Aldive runs that.

Actually I found the post that I had read at an earlier date and found that 2 1/2 size pipe was the recommended, not 2.25. My mistake.

yo saleen i got the dual inlet single outlet muffler..i went back to get the pipes but the dude said that i didnt lose any performance so dont waste my money on getting new pipes..

it's not that you lost anything, you just didn't gain anything using stock pipes except for sound. The stock piping has to many bends and constricts the air flow. Thats why a custom setup will usually use custom pipes that are smoother with less bends like a mandrel pipe setup.

How do you like the sound? I love Magnaflows on dual setups like on the 4.6 sohc and dohc engines along with 5.0's. If you went with a dual outlet muffler and had like dual 2.5 or 3" pipes you would have noticed a performance increase and meaner sound.
