'98 Explorer Sport
Hi there,

I recently acquired a '98 Explorer Sport for $700! Which I aptly named "Dora, The Explorer!"

Everything works, except for the radio.

So I looked up how to remove it using those prongs, didn't want to spend $10 on them so I made them out of a wire hanger.

Worked like a charm, got it out.

Once I got it out, I noticed that NOTHING was connected!

So now, I have these connections:

But have these connectors:

Which do not connect to the radio.

What can I do?

This is the model:

Appreciate any help.

It looks like someone cut into the harness and tried to put different plugs on. I guess first order is to confirm that radio is for a 1998 (which i think it is)

You may have to hit up a junkyard, cut off the correct plugs and splice them back into the harness so it plugs in.

Or buy an after market unit, find the diagram for the explorer and pull off those incorrect plugs and splice in the aftermarket unit.

Bench test it first to make sure it works before you go through any trouble.
Previous owner probably removed an aftermarket deck and replaced it with
the original unit to fill the empty hole. Also keep a fire extinguisher handy. ;)

I still have my original radio (w/ CD) collecting dust in the basement (from a 98 XLT) - yours free if you want it, just pay shipping (from Germantown, MD, 20876). I can also take pics of the back (connector's receptacles) if you need it for reference.

im in Kitchener Waterloo if u want to pop out i have an almost complete 01 sport here u can take the plugs u need and i believe the stereo is here somwhere

Gotta love forums!

Sorry for the thread hijack but since another member asked for pics, I might as well upload these here for reference. In these pics, the radio is still in the "bezel" but of course the bezel itself is not part of the radio. Again, this particular unit is from a 1998 XLT.

hmm, looks like the connectors that I have spliced in on mine currently would fit yours.

I was able to meet up with Sogsnakebite and we found out that my radio unit is in fact not a 98, but much newer since it has both CD and tape deck. I still have to splice in the new connector that I got from Sogsnakebite to see if it actually works.
