Ok, can anyone please tell me where in the hell I can find the main computer on these rigs??

My wife just got a 98 Mercury Mountaineer which as we all know is basically an Explorer, but where in the hell is the computer at? Usually it's in the passenger side kick panel, but that's the Airbag computer module.

I need to find it because on it is a sticker that contains the factory default code for the numeric entry system on the driver dooor. Without that code I can't program in a new code of my wife's choosing.

Thanks for the assistance!

TYou will find it on the passenger side firewall in the enfine compartment.

Take a look at Dead Link Removed

The main computer is accessed from the engine bay, in the firewall on the passenger side (think in front of the airbag). However, your code for the keyless entry might be on a sticker on the GEM module. This module is behind the interior panel in the cargo area on the driver side. Accessible from the jack compartment, slightly forward of that.

Thanks for the info, I'll check the cargo area when my wife gets back from an errand.

BTW, neither the haynes or the Chilton manuals tell you where to find it, at least not that I've been able to find yet....

Don't get discouraged when you can't find it at first. You will need a flashlight and probably get your whole head in there. It is a bit of a pain in the butt.

Good luck...

Actually Alec was partially right. The code can be found on the box in the rear jack compartment, however it isn't the GEM (general electronics module). It is the Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module. The GEM is located behind the radio, attached to the firewall.

Geez these things have too many wires and gizmos!

Hey at least you got him in the right area :) I was affraid he would look up where his GEM was and then report back that he tore his whole dashboard apart looking for the code.

A mirror on a stick might help too, as some stickers aren't as easy to see as others...:)

What crankcase said,,,,, good luck bro!:D

Thanks for all the assistance guys, the advice worked perfectly. I found the code and was able to successfully reprogram in our own code that now works!

Everyone here are awesome resources. I just wanted to say thanks and I'm glad to find another resource like this. I recently sold my 1999 Mercury Cougar after starting a site of simmular talent - http://www.newcougar.org

glad you found it, and welcome!
