OK, I finally gave up on my stock knob and junked it. So I go to mount a new one on there, and drill out the 4.5mm hole in the middle of the shift lever to 19/64 and tap it at 5/16-18. Now I'm wondering what that hole was there for. I assumed that it was just a hollow shaft, but now I'm wondering if all those metal filings that went down the hole are going to wind up in the shifter mechanism or something else... Anyone know?

The shavings will just sit inside the shaft, so they shouldn't hurt anything. The shaft is hollow so it reduces the weight you have to move therefore making shifting easier. Hope this helps.
