Real simple ; I thought.

I need to find a good manual transmission i can bolt to a 4.0l ohv.

Please Don't ask about the 400hp, the important part is it is a v6 and it will be spinning 37-38' tires.

I am willing to use a divorced transfer case if i have to.

I was told a t5 is not good.

UPDATE

Unfortunately I could not find a reasonable alternative and the t5 would not be worth the risk considering the abuse. I will be going with a C4.

Thanks for any help.

I was looking into a Tko with a divorced transfercase, any ideas what would be the best transfercase to use? I would prefer a t5 rebuilt to handle the power but so far I have been told it wont hold up.

Anyone know anything about this??? Or know anywhere that might be able to help?

I have to decide on my transmission in the next 2 months and I anticipate I am already running late.

Help?

I didnt think there was a direct bolt up except the m5od?

and we want to know about the 400hp

some one makes an adapter to bolt up a full size trans, that and a sm465 should hold up well

I am going to quote supersix as to the hp for the 4.0l ohv.

"We offer ported cylinder heads, cams, forged pistons to raise the compression ratio. To make 400 HP you will also need a 125-shot of nitrous or a turbo system."

I'm going with a NX system because I will not need the extra power unless its going through deep mud. Boggers don't actually get you out of mud if they are not self cleaning properly. Oh and a "go" button is fun!

I wanted to try and avoid using gm parts and try and avoid using an automatic. I may reluctantly end up going c4 automatic to stay in the ford family parts bin.

Super six also suggested the manual shift c6 ( actually suggested a c4 I'm just stupid) trans over the t5 considering my application.

I am waiting for a response from G force to see what they say about my application and there t5 kit.

I am reluctant to go gm trans I was hoping for a easy bolt up ford option.

I thought of the gm transmissions first but I really want to keep this all ford and easy to swap on. More importantly I haven't found a bell housing to swap the sm465 on to a 4.0lohv. Believe me I understand chevy.. My last truck was a sb stroked 400 with a bulletprooftransmissions 400 with a 205 transfer case. If I get a c6 ( again dumb ass had a fantasy about the c6) I will get bulletproof transmissions to build me another monster.

Point is? well I have two more months and i will be replacing the trans and transfercase. Then its lift and front end time. Last but not least i will be rebuilding the engine based on parts and advice from supersix. I hope to be up and destroying parts by next late spring/early summer.

This is why I am after simple swap over complicated brackets; time is an issue.

Thanks for your input.

I have done a bit of ford research with the manual trans and it looks like I could use the np435 as a ford product swap. As long as I can find a bell housing it should be a good option. This could work out after all.

"The New Process 435 transmission was used in Chrysler (1963-1993 ), Ford (1964-1987 ) and G.M. (1963-1972 ) trucks. These transmissions have a 6.68 to 1 1st gear ratio in all three applications. While Chrysler and G.M. applications also offered a 4.56 to 1 ratio. The Ford versions adapted real well into the early Broncos (1966-1977 ) and late Jeep CJs (1980-1986 ) with only minor modifications. While other conversions require more modifications including drive shafts lengths. The NP 435 is a HD transmission with cast iron case and aluminum cover. It is synchronized 2nd through 4th gear with sliding gear for 1st and reverse. They ran a solid cluster on needle bearings and a tapered main drive gear bearing on most applications."

If I can’t find the right unit in my area I will just swap in a mazda manual trans while I hunt down the right unit. I am going to need the explorer manual parts to swap a manual in my auto truck anyway.

I was also thinking of going nv4500 to begin with but it’s not a ford product. I also have no idea if there is a bell housing that would fit. I would have never put a ford product in my Chevy.

If for some reason all the manual options don’t pan out in my time line I will do an automatic.

Thanks again for your ideas

For manual enthusiasts I did find out that the t5 can be made to swap right up to the 4.0l ohv and there is a older adapter that can be used to connect a transfer case. That also means you can swap a TKO as well. If you want I can find the part number's.

Although many of the parts are nla ( no longer available) there are still parts floating around.

This link has the t5 swap part and numbers. although this is a v8 swap thread you can use a newer v6 mustang bellhousing and swap it on your v6.

So if you are running around 300-400hp and you are not going to use 38" tires or nitrous then it can be a good option for you.

For a lowered 2wd exploder the TKO or g-force built t5 is a Great option.

As for me the best solution is a c4 with a manual valve body with a atlas transfer case behind it. I know you are thinking that I will be stuck with no overdrive...well as insane as it sounds I am going to save my pennies and try out a gear vendor for an additional 3k.

If the 700r4 is set up properly it can take up to around 600 hp; But because of its first gear many forget to balance out their differential gearing to match the 700r4 second gear ratio. That mistake kills the transmission fast. There is also the cable issue that kills many a 700r4's because of poor install. The 700r4 has way too many variables to worry about for a point and shoot guy with nitrous plans.

I know the 700r4 very well but most importantly for me was the issue of staying ford on a ford.

So, C4 with a manual valve body to start with. The top speed in my area is around 100k kilometers an hour. That's like 60 miles an hour... later i will upgrade the transfer case to a atlas. Then if the truck works out and I do alot of traveling with it I will eventually add a gear vendor for overdrive.

I hope some of this crap helped out
