After several threads mentioning how important the MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor) is for many reasons related to mileage, rough idling, etc. I decided to inspect and clean.
I was able to access the two little wire sensors without dismounting the actual sensor from the aluminum bell housing by removing a small flat metal plate in back of the unit. They did not look dirty and, in fact the entire assembly looked very clean including the main black rubber air intake tube. Nonetheless, I sprayed electronic contact cleaner thoroughly from front and back over the wires. Afterward I could swear the wires looked a bit thinner, and I suspect there was a thin grayish coating on them before the cleaning. Since I never checked this since buying the old girl used 6 years ago, I'm not sure if cleaning was needed.
Result: Something has changed and it seems the idle and acceleration are a bit smoother. Not a dramatic change, but a slight improvement on overall performance.
Sidenote: I also used the contact cleaner on the little Air Temperature Sensor just down-pipe from the MAS (past the oil breather tube and before the bend). It looks like a little red matchhead inside a plastic protective loop. It had some black residue on the down-wind side. Don't know if this helped at all, but probably a good thing to clean also.
