Ok...

I went off roading and bottomed out, the mechanic said i broke a gear box and that is why my power steering is messed up and i have a leak. He said it would be $735.00 to fix, does this seem right?

He also said $400.00 to fix my breaks and rotors cause its 4 wheel drive, can i do it for cheaper and how much less?

Thanks sooo much!

Mike

Go to a brakes plus to check the brakes out if there's one in your area. About the rest, did you bottom out really hard or something, because I've bottomed hard and nothing happened but maybe I'm lucky.

a brake job yourself for the front for example would be $40 a rotor, $20 a caliper, and $15 for the pads...in my opinion, the price he quoted is outrageous...my price quotes are from NAPA.

To be honest, the brake job doesn't sound too outragous. Is he doing all 4 brakes or what? Where did you take it. Midas and Tuffy are usually competitive priced.

As for the gearbox?? Is the leak from the power steering or gearbox? It just doesn't sound right... are the two even related? I really don't know... but if you "broke" a gear box, it seams like you're have problems galore (not just power steering).

Here is exactley what the guy wrote on my "Diagnosis sheet" he printed out for me...

2) EST ON GEAR BOX & LINES - $575.00

1) EST ON FRT BRAKES, ROTORS, PADS, H/KIT, SEALS, REPACK W/BRINGS, FRT AXLE JOINTS, ALL - $715.00

5) RESEAL TRANS - $200.00

4) RESEAL RT VC GSKT, OIL FILTER ADPT - $250.00

3) REPL SERP BELT - $69.00

The numbers are the catagorized by what he thinks needs to be fixed first.

The auto clinic is called Bayliss, its just a non-corporate city auto shop.

So do you think all of those prices add up right?

Thanks again!

Mike

I didn't know that the first generation recirculating ball steering even had a gearbox? I thought that gears were only used on 2nd gen. explorers with rack&pinion steering.....

If you have basic tools and a bit of common sense, go buy a Haynes or Chilton manual and save yourself some major bucks!
Trans seal - ok, take it to a shop(if it REALLY needs one, look for red wet spots under the truck or on the bottom of the tranny), $200, still a bit high.
Serp belt- NAPA, Pep-Boys.. $20 DIY(do it yourself-easy)
Brakes - new bearings, bearing grease, caliper grease, pads, new/turn rotors. easily under $150, again, DIY and just because it is a 4wd, doesn't make it THAT much different. Instead of a cotter pin, there are a few other pieces, but still not that hard.
Gear box - never priced one, but I'm sure the manual spells out how to replace one..

Try it, you'll learn loads(esp, how to save money) and it will give you the confidence to try harder things later on. Plus, we are here if you need an help.

Thanks a lot all of you guys, and Goober, thanks for you help also...Im 18 and know nothing of cars, so I think I will go buy a manual...and you truck is the ****, mine is a black 4dr...and it envys yours.

Thanks again...

Mike:)
