Have a 2000 Mountaineer and pulled the headliner out. The backing is like cheep insulation and because of heat and age has made it brittle. My worry is the glue will absorb on the material and not stick to the fabric. You would think with the millions of Explorers / Mountaineers parts would be plentiful.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated !.

Back in my younger days (ie. I'm getting damn old), the headliner spray adhesive that they sold at auto parts stores (and some hardware stores) came out like silly string and didn't absorb much unless you sprayed it too near the headliner or too thick. I'd get some of that and try a little test section first.

If my Explorer wasn't an off road thrasher/ secondary vehicle (worth the time / effort) I'd pull out the headliner and spray the ceiling with grey Plasti-dip.... someone here needs to be the guinea pig on this and post after pics ;)
I'd imagine it would do a halfway decent job of mitigating heat / cold...
