Mercury Mountaineer battery dead! can't open hood!!!

Hi.
I'm new to these forums, I just recently got a 1997 mercury mountaineer and the hood opened when I first got it. Now it won't open! And to make matters worse the battery died!
Is there an emergency release to the hood somewhere?
Please help and thanks in advance!

Welcome to the site..
I have outlined the latch mechanism below.. You want to use a long screwdriver and move the release mechanism to the right...

I figured the problem out, it was the metal bracket that was bending behind the pull handle causing it to have a lot of slack.

For others in the same situation:
If you can't open your hood like me, try pulling on the bottom of the grill and slipping your arm through, then grasp the cable and give it a firm tug, the hood should pop open.

If a large screwdriver & hammer can't fit in there then I don't want to touch it..
