hi yall. for the last couple weeks, ive notice this metal clanking/grinding noise comming from underneath the explorer. it only does it when it is in drive, reverese, or the 1, and 2 drive features. i mean, it doesnt sound like a hardcore, 'something is goin to blow up sound', more like if you were dragging a chain on the road at about 30 mph. the sound is there when it is in those positions, regardless if im sitting still, or moving (although, my fan clutch is so loud now that when i start moving again, you cant hear it). ive looked under the explorer, and didnt see any fluid leaking, or anything dragging, so im stumped. any help would be gratly apprciated!

Toeque converter bolts, flywheel? Those two come to mind., What about the exhaust pipe sheild that is on the driverside pipe near the tranny, they are welded, and the welds do break, if it is loose, then use metal hose clamp to tighten it up, mine did that.

Hey guys...
I'm a new owner of a 94 xlt.

mine is also making a grinding noise and vibration at any speed but, it only does it in 1,2,3rd gear and while in OD it isnt there. its not a bad sound or vibration really.. just kind of a truck type sound.

the noise isn't there if my tach is below 2k in any gear.

any ideas on what to look at or is the trans just noisy in those gears.

now it did make a weird rubbing sound "like plastic against the tread, then a "CLUNK" for an instant today (2 days after I bought it) I thought that was poss. the 4 wheel drive accdently engauging thru the auto lock hubs.

check your u joints. all that i can think of, and is probally your best bet.

When I first bought mine, it had a wierd shifting thump kinda sound, found that the filter was wasted, ended up changing tranny filter, and fluid, problem was solved, that may help you.
