My uncle has a mid 90's 2nd gen explorer sport, it is a 5 speed, 4.0L OHV, and 4x4. It has 209,000 mi, he has put 3 "rebuilt" and one "brand new" gearbox in it and they all get the same problem within 50 miles, pop out of gears, especially reverse. Hes getting frustrated with it and is about to junk it if the next gearbox doesnt go good. What do these get for mileage? and is 209,000 miles should i expect it to be toast? I would like to get it up in the air a ways as inexpensive as possible and put some decent rims/tires on it and call it good, i know theres no snow or mud here in cali, but if i make some trips up into oregon id like to have something with 4x4 for the winter. The interior is kinda ratty, mostly the seats which isnt a huge deal to me as he has an upholster at his shop. I think i would yard out all the interior plastic and just roll on a good coat of second skin lol. Any input is appreciated.
p.s. where do i post miscellaneous questions like these? its related to a stock 95-01 explorers but its not really a repair or tech question?
