Hey guys! Starting January 10th, my insurance on my mustang with State Farm will be canceled  Every other place I call to insure me on the car with full coverage is over $2000 every 6 months  So I've narrowed my search down to a ranger or explorer. I'll be getting liability coverage. I have a few questions about the explorer:

What kind of gas mileage do they get? I'm probably gonna get an early 90s with a 4.0. How good of mileage do they 4x4s get? What about the 2 door Sports? Are these good engines and will they last a long time? What kind of mileage should I look for in an Explorer? I'm hoping to find one under 100k miles. Any common problems I should look for?

The only problem with the early explorers is the tranny's other than that they are great vehicles my 92 sport gets a 21 higway 18 city and I have had it for 4 years and it is buy far the best vehicle I have ever owned.I Have had alot of stangs so I know what you mean about insurance. What year stang do you have?

Sorry its still early for me

Sorry Nick I should have paid better attension 90 notch:D As for the engines the 4.0 is a great motor with mods like KKM and flowmaster they get even better:D

Whats KKM? Did they ever come with 5 speed trannies?

Nik

Yeah my 92 XLT had a 5 speed tranny with cenerforce clutch it was a real nice truck.KKM is a conical style filter that replaces the airbox, lot better throttle response and better gas mileage:D

if you dont mind me askin.,..how many dang tickets have you had

My '92 gets in teens, occasionally gets up to 20. Some get a little better, a few get up in the high 20's. The 4.0 OHV V6 is considered a very reliable engine. Mine has nearly 150K and hasn't had any major work done and doesn't show any signs of needing major work. There are bad apples in every bunch, but the usual concensus I see i that the 4.0 OHV will go a long ways. The only common "problem" that I've seen is spark knock. Easily fixed and been discussed several times here, search for engine ping and you'll find lots of threads.
Another common problem, for 4x4 models, is the electric shift motor. This one also is easily fixed, and been discussed several times.
The big problem you'll want to check carefully is the transmission if you're looking at an automatic. The A4LD in first gen explorers ('91-'94) does have a bad reputation. The O/D commonly goes out along with various seals and such. If you are looking at an auto, make sure it has a transmission cooler on it. Can make a lot of difference in the condition and durability of the transmission.
One last "problem" I'd suggest yopu check is the Radius arm bushings. If they haven't been replaced, they will likely go bad soon, and, while not difficult to replace, are fairly labor intensive and can get a little pricey if you have someone do it for you.
Other than that, check out the usual things. I like mine (just wish it got a little better gas mileage). Good all purpose transportation. And welcome to the site, probably wouldn't like my explorer near as much without these guys to help me find and fix the little things as well as the big things.

Thanks for the info guys. As for how many tickets...
I was in an accident with my first car on 05-06-00. I got a speeding ticket on 08-16-01. I just recently had a run in with another car on 10-09-02 when some lady slammed on brakes in front of me in the rain, and if you have an old fox body stang, you know the brakes suck. I also got a ticket earlier this month for 84 in a 45.

Yeah insurance is a killer on stangs and they suck in the winter I myself am a huge mustang nut. have a 99 full saleen makeover and my 92 ex for winter and the good old 68 stang in the grage to restore. keep the stang eat the comaroes and rice balls all summer long man :-)
