misfiring

Greetings: I have a 1991 Explorer with 195,000 miles on it,,It has been a real champ until yesterday when I noticed it running rough, and seemingly misfiring,, I prefer NOT to bring it to my mechanic, and pay his country club bill, with a $500 repair,,,any thoughts or suggestion would be appreciated,

My 01 was doing the same thing a little while back, turned out to be a bad spark plug. They were Bosch Platinums that were only 4 months old, but one of them went bad. So start of checking the plugs. If it is throwing a CEL you might get the codes read to tell you which cylinder is not firing. Good luck,
