I cut the complete bottom of the airbox off so the k&n filter (not the cone but the square one) is showing. then I positioned it so the filter is parrallel with the air that is running off of the belts and fan. I seem to get better throttle response, however, the check engine light came on. is this from the inconsistant reading that the sensors are reading. If so, is it something that will produce further probs down the line? or can I just accept the fact that the light will stay on.

thanks

Welcome!

First check that the rest of your intake has a good seal and that all the wiring is fully in place.

Also (dumb suggestion) make sure you modified the prefilter side of the airbox and not the postfilter side.

EDIT: Also try resetting the computer.

thanks. would there be longer term effects from running it close to such an unstable wind/air force?

I don't think you will have any problems running your setup like you have it. Since you still have the upper part of the air box in place, I believe your filter is protected enough to not cause problems. If your fan was blowing directly on the filter at all times.......then maybe a slight problem like the mustang guys have. I don't think you have a problem with how you did it.
Now...about the check engine light. Your light should not stay on.
I agree with Alec, RESET your computer. Check all hoses, wiring, etc. and make sure all is secure. Disconnect your neg. battery terminal and let it sit for 1/2 hour...turn on your headlight switch or something and bleed all that electricity down.
After the time is up, reconnect the battery. Start the engine and let the engine idle for 10 minutes or so. Turn off, let sit for a couple minutes and then restart. Your check engine light should be gone. If not, you will have to search further into what is causing it.
BTW, I installed the KKM filter last week and also got the check light. Reset everything and the light never came back.
Let us know what happens.
Ken
