Thanks For the info...

I'm going to go for the 2005 Mustang engine with 21K miles from http://www.buffaloengine.com/

$588 with shipping and I will finish rebuilding the old engine as a backup.

You shouldn't use that engine, you need one with a balance shaft. Do not believe anyone who says it doesn't matter. If it didn't matter Ford never would have put it in the 4wd trucks. The way I understand it, without the balance shaft the main bearing fail.

I don't drive a lot of miles and I probably will be selling the truck for a newer one anyway.

I know of a fellow with a 2002 4x4 ranger with the 4.0L that broke the guides so he pulled the engine to find it didn't have a balance shaft.

Now I've heard that they have improved the harmonic balancer so there is now no need for the it yet I checked the details for the 2005 explorer motor and it shows a balance shaft....???????

Decisions decisions....

Mustang Motor 21K OR Explorer 4x4 motor with 89K?

Its a $600 gamble. Its not a question of if the engine will fail, but when.

I talked to a couple Ford fleet mechanics about this some time back. These guys specialize in the power-stroke engines but know the 4.0 SOHC inside and out because they have some of those too. The balance shaft is not for driver comfort, its to balance the engine when used in a 4x4. I dont understand the dynamics behind it but without the balance shaft you should expect bearing failure. Personally I wouldn't risk that much time and money experimenting with engines.

Food for thought.

Bob

p.s. If you plan to sell it, and you are an honest person that would like to avoid a potential law suite, you would need to advertise the truck as having the wrong engine. That would make it almost worthless. Another thought, if your changing the engine, why not put in a V8? avoid the whole problem.

I would love to upgrade to a V8 but what do I need to do that?

Well is there a Balance Shaft in a 2005or not?

Well I'm not so sure that is true.......

I have the ALLDATA disk. And I did a check on the 2005 Mustang Engine and it shows a Balance Shaft. Of course there is no balance shaft in the Mustang engine so I don't know why ALLDATA is showing it in there disassemble/Assembly instructions.

So then what year engine was the upgraded Harmonic Balancer installed and did this upgrade remove the need for a balance shaft??????

Fly Wheel or flex plate?

Well I found out that the Mustang engine HAS a balance Shaft if it's a manual drive.

I can't tell for sure in the picture, but if it has a flex plate. If so, then it should have a balance shaft

Is that the Mustang Engine you are considering?

I cant tell from the picture. Can you call and get a engine number?

That does look nice and clean. If its the balance shaft engine that would be a good deal.

Bob

p.s. You will need a couple of these to make that engine work.

I think it did come out of an automatic. I'm having a problem looking up the code.

Sealants?

I'm getting ready to assemble and time the engine.

I need a list of sealants that I will need to assemble this engine like Permatex.

Which ones do I need for the oil pan, timing cover, valve cover and such?

Thanks,

Cliff

engine sealants

Glad to hear you're back working on your engine Cliff! Did you complete the transmission swap on your son's vehicle? Did your vehicle end up being the transmission donor? Did you buy a replacement engine for your vehicle or are you repairing your original one?

I didn't use any sealants on the valve covers or the lower oil pan. I applied RTV on the block cradle gasket in several places as directed by the SOHC V6 engine assembly instructions that you have a copy of. I applied high temperature gasket sealant to the front timing cover gasket. You'll also need thread lock for some of the bolts. Don't forget anti-sieze compound for the spark plugs and exhaust manifold to downpipe bolts.

I also used pre-lube on any rotating surfaces.

Thanks Dale,

As you know I pulled the Transmission out of the broken 2001 for my Son's 1999 Explorer after Reverse blew. I had it put in by a fellow that does Transmissions on the side at home. He has a lift and all the tools. It all went well. He only charged $200 to do the job which I thought was fair. He would of charged $1200 for a completes rebuild job which I think is also good. He's been doing this for over 20 years. I watched him the final part of the install. The one thing I had a problem with was the way he tightened the flexplate nuts. I was concerned by the way he turned the crank. Well he used a long pry bar to push up on the plate in the counter clockwise direction! I told him why he should not do that on this type of engine but he said he was doing it this way for 20 years. I asked him for a 19mm deep socket ratchet wrench so I could turn the crank clockwise before it starts.

BTW here's a picture of where the 2001 is sitting next to my wife's garden until I finish and install the engine.

I was thinking about rebuilding the transmission my self. A rebuild set cost less then $150 so if I did that I would not only be testing the engine but the trans!

I was wondering if I could remove the bell housing from the trans and install it to the rebuilt engine so I could test it without the Transmission hooked up?

PS........ I didn't buy the 2005 Engine because I used the money for my Son's Explorer that he needs for College.
