More problems with my EX

Can't have brand loyalty without great customer service!

You make a good point, 'truth. Here's a story:

So I'm minding my business, rolling along at about 55mph with cruise control engaged, and my '07 EB (V6...about 3k miles on her at the time) downshifts to keep speed going up a hill. Over the top of the hill, it upshifts back into OD and then all he!! breaks loose. The thing starts shuddering and wheezing bigtime. I was positive at least one engine mount had popped. No idiot lights, no info displayed in the message center, nothing. Just severe vibration, whether moving or stopped/at idle, and very little accelerator response. Happened 2 or 3 miles from the dealership where I bought it, so I limped it in. (Don't anyone even think about starting back up with the safety stuff...I rode the shoulder and hardly crossed paths with a soul.)

Anyway, I pull into the service bay, put it in park, kill the ignition, jump out and tell the service advisor that either it blew an engine mount or it's possessed. He gets in, starts it up...yep, you guessed it, now it purrs like a kitten. *&%$#@! You gotta be kidding me! Service advisor says he's gonna plug'er up to the computer and run diagnostics, and he'll call me later.

They didn't offer me a shuttle ride to work, a loaner, a cab voucher, or anything else. I didn't even ask...I called a bud to come get me. I knew the policy because I asked while car shopping. We could get into a big debate about whether or not they were obligated to do that, but the bottom line is that they DON'T do it. But those guys were genuinely concerned about the problem with my vehicle, and they regretted my inconvenience. The way they treated me made all the difference, because I honestly got the impression that they cared about fixing the problem. I didn't go away mad, because they had a great attitude. It was like, this sucks for you, and it's embarrassing for us, so you go do your thing while we go figure out our thing. I can't explain the difference very well, so I'll just say that they made it clear that they KNEW that this was an unacceptable situation, and that I deserve better reliability from the product. Clearly, though, they didn't have a team of valets waiting around for someone to snap their finger, either.

I bet if their attitudes had been poor, and if they had seemed not to "care," I'd probably have been inclined to log in here and complain about how $30k oughtta get you something that's not a p.o.s., etc., ad nauseum. Let's face it, stuff happens...the warranty is an acknowledgment of that. I just think I'd rather have it this way, than to pay a higher price for a vehicle because the dealer baked in a bunch of "support" expenses. But there's no doubt, I'd blow my stack too if all I got was the shoulder-shrug, and the "hey I just work here...I didn't build the thing."

Turns out there was a TSB out on this issue...just needed to download the equivalent of a software patch. Apparently, some program that deals with the torque converter got into a disagreement with the "shift strategy" programming. I guess neither was willing to relent until I shut off the ignition.

When my co-worker dropped me off, the service manager even went out to apologize to HIM for HIS inconvenience, for having to go out of his way to drop me off. To me, customer service makes all the difference in the world, because once you own the vehicle, they are as much of a reflection on the brand as anything else. Don't promise me a car that won't break...that's not realistic. But if I can have confidence in the folks that maintain the car, that's pretty good. I hope someone renews these other owners' trust in their Explorers, because I want the folks I trust to stay in business.

I respectfully have to disagree with you sir. EVERY car will not have some degree of warranty repairs.

Actually, I said every vehicle on the road, meaning each type or model. Pardon me if it was unclear. I am driving an 06 XLT right now that has had no flaws whatsoever. I hope it continues to be absolutely trouble free. But, If I need a few items repaired I will not consider it unusual.

Now , to be fair, I think the problems others are having with their V-8 auto tranny's is a BIG problem. I would probably be a bit unhappy if I was a V-8 owner. The idea (someone stated) that every vehicle that comes off the line should be 100% trouble free for a year is just ridiculous. And those with major problems deserve satisfaction. It sound like you may be one of those. Read my posts carefully, I have commented that a window repair & slight AF leak are not big items. Not that those with serious problems should be dismissed. I stand by what I have posted.

Honestly, if I had the problems you did with 2 previous vehicles I would not have plunked down $41K for a third vehicle. How's that saying go? Fool me once...

Fact: there is not a single manufacturer who produces a trouble free line of autos.

I understand that these are not "big" problems, however when the dealership knew what my problems were when i brought it to them the first time they didnt take any steps as to ordering the parts. So then i bring it back in to have it "fixed" and guess what they never order any parts so there went one full day when i had to find other means of transportation. For them all to get completed was an oil change and tire rotation. So then I had to waste another full day to bring it back in when they got the parts in. Which should have only been a two day wait, but since they never called and i had to call them then make an appointment, and when i got there their response to the af problem was this is a common problem. Well why not have these parts on hand then.

I have had many cars in the past. my most recent ones a 2001 honda civic. Guess what never once did it go back to the dealership from the time i signed the papers until I got rid of it. Then I also had a 2002 dodge stratus 2 door (same as a mit. eclipse). Once again it never went to the dealership from the time i bought it. 4 years without a problem and now 1 year with problems.. hmm whats wrong here. Jap no problems, american problems. i guess this is why mor jap cars are being sold and they are the ones building more plants here and american are closing up their plants.

I think you may be right, but it isn't jsut the Japanese cars, I say would say anything other than American, or non union built vehicles. I am sure I am going to start a fire here, but the union serves no useful purpose today except to ensure that underskilled people are overpaid for work they don't do. My dad raised me to believe that every American deserves the right to EARN a big house, a truck and a boat in the back yard. (Hence my 10 years so far in the Service) It seems that most Americans believe that they deserve a truck and a nice house just for being born in America. I grew up in a GM town (Dayton, Ohio) and most of my friend's parents worked at one of the GM plants. I used to think it was unfair when I heard my friend's dad complain about not getting a raise, but now I know that he worked a brake press for 20 years and had no high school diploma. Tenure does not justify a pay raise. Improved performance, new skills, and increasing responsibility do. That is something that working for a union takes away, if you don't like your job or your company because of pay or retirement plans, QUIT, and be happy that you have the right to quit, don't demand pay for something you don't deserve. The union was created based on UNSAFE and abusive treatment, none of which exist today, OSHA sees to that. Its not encouraging to work hard and have pride in your job if you get paid whether you work hard or not, just gotta show up and do the minumum=union.

I am prepared for the flaming to begin.:shoot:

LovemyEXP, I like your Exp, I wish they would make a kit for the 06+, but not likely, too many electronics and independent rear suspension, would be very expensive, but I can dream...a 4" lift...sigh.
