I have a 91 XL 4X4 5 speed with a stock rebuilt engine in it. I live in the mounatins of NE Georgia and I'm about to buy a 17' -18' ski boat. What kind of fairly cheap modifications can I make to increase the pulling power of my Explorer? Do the aftermarket exhaust systems (flowmaster, etc.) only increase upper end horsepower? I don't really care about high rpm power, I want more torque. I am a land surveyor and the truck is used exclusively for my business - driving thru a lot of pretty steep hills and woods and other areas where the 4 wheel drive is used.

Thanks for your help.

A good custom 2.25 exhaust system will actually increase torque.
Also, you should consider regearing to 4.10.

The combination of those two should help you out immensely.

I would also free up the intake with a KKM setup.

Go to your local muffler shop and have them make a custom cat back for your truck.

Chanhling to synthetic fluids all around will help also.

Good luck.....

I know that on my 92 XLT the factory stock exhuast system was 2.25" however on my 93 XLT it was only 2" You might want to check yours out before shelling out the bucks for a 2.25" or 2.5" system. Intake and gears should be on your list of considerations.
