Ok, just got a new job that is going to help me fund the rest of my explorer project.

I have a 2005 Explorer w/ 4.0 L SOHC V-6 engine

I really want to put a 5.0 in it but I was told it would be EXTREMELYYY high inprice. Recommended to do a 4.6 swap.

Thoughts?? 4.6 vs 5.0?

Wanting to do some work to either engine that I get, Not looking to be a track car only looking for 450-500hp.

What's the first steps to doing so?

Rough price estimate?

Anyone ever done the swap? How was your experience?

Won't be on till tomorrow night work 12 hour shifts, Please no rude comments just looking for a step in the right direction!!

body kit?

If you haven't already installed your body kit you may want to consider selling your current vehicle with the 4.0L and purchasing a replacement with the 4.6L. That might be cheaper and less inconvenient than upgrading your 4.0L in the same vehicle. You could find a 4.6L vehicle that needs engine work and install power adders while repairing it.

I seriously doubt that you can achieve 500 bhp on the 4.6L unless you add forced induction. If you could the vehicle would probably not be street drivable. Also, the entire bottom end would have to be beefed up to hold together. I would budget at least $10K just for the engine. The cheapest and most reliable route would be to purchase a long block crate engine.

I think the best thing would be to sell your current Explorer and find one with a 4.6 V8. With a CAI, exhaust and tune, they run pretty darn good.

Getting 450-500hp will require a built block and some type of forced induction and fuel upgrades. Then you are going to have to have your transmission rebuilt to handle the extra power and even that will be a challenge. Mounty03 had his built and was still destroying his at those power levels.

If you lower your HP goal to around 300-350hp, then everything gets A LOT cheaper and more reliable. You could get a V8 and slap a supercharger on and be good for the most part. If I decide to keep mine for good, then that's exactly the route I will be going.

Ah ok, That's what I'll probably wind up doing then. Thanks for the info guys!
