I am need of replacing my tires on my 04 xlt. I have the 16" rims. Living in cleveland ohio my whole life I have always gone with tires that are great with snow. I had planned on getting new tires prior to winter, and had also planned on going with a larger tire, like a 265 instead of my current 235. All of my ideas changed when I found out I would be moving to Georgia in November. I was wondering if there are any suggestions for the brand and type of tire I should get? Here are my driving habits and type of conditions I usually drive in: I will be doing mostely local druiving on paved roads, in addition to occasional highway driving. When driving on the highway I tend to exceed the speed limit by about 15 miles. I do very little off-road, in fact what I consider off road most of you probably consider on-road. Since I will not be driving in snow, I figure my next tire should be great in rain, and just be OK if the occasional inch of snow falls, or if I have to make an emergency drive back to ohio. I would like to stick with a larger tire, I do not want my explorer to look like a mini van, I really like the look of an off-road tire. I appreciate everyones help and suggestions, tire rack is just too broad.

I have a strong preference for BF Goodrich All Terrains. They have a mean off road look from the sidewall, but run quietly on the highway. They perform fairly well off road as well. They are a bit more expensive than comparable all terrain tires, but they last a long long time. I have heard about and seen people get 60,000+ out of a set. Personally, I have run mine for about 5-6k miles some of which while towing a heavy trailer, and all four tires show no wear. I don't regret buying them a bit.

I like the look of the BFG A/T, have you had any performance issues in the rain? I have also looked at the Dunlup Radial Rover A/T, as well as the Yokohama Geolander H/T-S. After driving in Atlanta for a month, I have come to realize that the rain tends to come down quite hard in addition, if you arent moving at 80 mph, you best get out of the way.

I haven't had much experience with them in the rain. It was an unusually dry summer and it had only recently rained. During most of the rain, I wasn't driving so I can't provide much help in that department. What rain I have driven in, I haven't had any problems, but I never drive 80 mph.

I also looked at the Yoko Geolander A/T, it isn't as aggressive of a tire as the BFG, but it still had a nice look.

I agree with mountaineergree the bfg a/t are great looking and performing. If you decide to go with them I have a set of 245/75/16 basically new, just looking to get $400 out of them so I don't lose my butt on them. I am in detroit area, so shipping shouldn't be to expensive or meeting up wouldn't be a problem. Only reason I am selling is I upgraded to 33s, had a buyer for wheels and tires, tire buyer was a deadbeat bidder, oh well, regardless they are a great tire.

I ran the BFG A/T (30x9.50x15)for about three years & the did fine in dry,wet & snow.

I would have gotten 50-60K out of them but my front end was out off alignment which caused some un-even wear.

The only reason I did not go back with them is because I could not afford them at that time.

damn too bad ur going up in size, i have someBFG A/T, a 235 size, i'm trying to get rid of, only like 800 miles on them, good luck w/ ur choice, they are very good tires!

Thanks for your help. I am still trying to decide if I should go up in size or not. I guess it couldnt hurt right? If I do I will only probably go to 255's. I dont want to mess with my speedometer too much. I have narrowed it down to three tires, the Michelin cross terrain (the original tires that came on my ex) the Bridgstone Dueler A/T Revos, or the yokohama geolander H/Ts G051. I appreciate any additional feedback, and will keep you updated.

Thanks
