This is the distributor that I think I'm going with. Part# 8582. I talked to my local 4x4 shop and this guys supposed to know his stuff on distributors. This multiple spark stuff is farily new to me. On my racing engines I had Vertex magnetos. He said he can sell me one for $275 not including the box, which is another $275 ouch. I did'nt skimp on the carb and heads so no reason on something as important as this. But if it is a good quality and really does get the job done right. Meaning suppling a really good spark with low maintenance fine.

Any comments on this set-up. I really want an aftermarket set-up.

Your vehicle is designed to use a distributorless ignition system. How do you expect to use this without getting a check engine light? They sell performance coils, and an MSD module for a distributorless ignition system. There is another thread about an Accel performance coil pack which you could use.

Sorry, I did not mention that this is for my B11 build which has a 302 dist. engine and no computors.

What year is that vehicle? Wouldn't a magneto be better if there is no computer?

Click on the bottom of my signature to my build. Kinda long though. This will be a DD and trail rig. No I do not want a magneto.

MSD is a capacitive discharge system. It uses capacitors to act like small batteries to increase the level of the output spark. Jacobs Electronics uses an inductive discharge system. This is similar to using small transformers to step up the available output charge.

So that's whats in that $275 box.

They make several models. The more expensive models have rev limiting plug in modules. You could just get the basic one. I think it is about $150. By the way, they have excellent customer service, and offer repairs. Many years ago, I was experimenting with one of them, and burned it out. I mailed it to them, and they charged me $19 to repair it. They said that a power resistor on its output burned out. If you ever decide on open one of them, you will see that the inside is baked in some sort of wax to keep moisture, and corrosion out.

That's good to know about the service, that's going to plary big in determining if I go with this co. I'll check out the basic one also. I really do want somekind of rev limit. This thing ought to really twist out some Rs. I plan to put a low oil press. cut-off also.

I think there is also an adjustable rev limiting version that has a control which could be mounted inside of the vehicle. These modules have a tach output on the side of them. The company recommends using it instead of attaching a wire onto the coil. What is wrong with a magneto system? I haven't had any experience with them, so I was just curious.

I'm not really sure other then for slow trail riding an ideling I really don't think they put out enough spark. Now this is just my hunch. Those racing engines rarly saw under 6000 rpms and that is where that mag. really put out the spark. But your talking over 30 years ago also. I know one thing, one time the engine stuck wide open while we were working on it and my partner reached over and pulled the wires off the mag and was sent flying. I think it was about 50,000 volts at that RPM.
