So I was skipping around the boneyard today, very limited selection. The one thing I really wanted was an electric fan from a Mustang. Newer Mustang fans are about 4" thick and have 3 wires. Older Mustang fans have a huge motor making it about 7" thick, but only 2 wires.

Anybody done this mod? I assume the older, thicker one will never fit. What's the deal with the 3 wires on the newer one. I hope the 3rd one does not go to a thermostat, cuz I couldn't find it. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, JK

I am putting an electric fan in my 93 mustang and have though several times of installing one in my X.... but get the lincoln mark8 fan... best one going and pick it up brand new for $99....
if I do keep the beast Ill probably have one in the X sooner or later

Dont do it Pony

Your truck will overheat if you put an electric fan in a v8 explorer. Trust me I have tried a bunch of different ones with same result. The car runs hot untill you get into trafic and then it over heats. It is waist of your time to put one in because there is not enough room to put a electric fan that will flow enough CFM to cool the explorers properly. I melted my last electric one. I love my mecanical fan! It has never let me down.

Ug.

Purpony, What yearl Lincoln Mk 8? Any idea how much cfm? Do you have a part number?

My main concern is still the 3 wires. How do I know which is Positive, which is neutral, and which is for the sensor? :banghead:

I know X's throw a lot of heat, but I only have a V6, live in the northeast, and would never off road or tow in a heat wave. A fan designed for a V8 should have similar or greater cooling power than my mechanical fan.

J. Kennedy- all I know is right now its the hottest set-up out there for 87-93 5.0 mustang. It should be the same fan 93-98.... and I can get a part number for you in the morning probably and the amount of cfm's. I am not sure on the hook-up and wiring... still learning about that... but I am going to be ordering one in the next few days for my mustang.
It should be fine in your V-6 up here......... I live right under you in CT.
I just thought it would be neat in my X but after listening to troll Im scared- lol
thanks for the info- same me some time and money.
night
