Hello all. I posted here for the first time in a while a few days ago. I am in a predicament with too many crap vehicles, one of them being an '02 XLT.
Quick history, I became a member years ago, when I had a first gen 2 door. I loved that thing, but wound up getting rid of it for the POS '02 I have now.
A bunch of us that should have known better have these rigs, and mine has been parked for better than 6 months...with a number of the common factory-denied '02 ailments. I have clicking from the rear air blend door (which I was just reading about here), I have a blown 4WDCM, and I have a flashing O/D light and a tranny (not sure which...5r55w or 5r55s?) that is about to completely crap the bed.
Who knows...maybe if I read some more around here, I'll recognize more problems I don't even know I have.
So, I have a few bucks, and instead of buying someone else's used up nightmare, I am really considering dropping the $ on this '02 so that it is driveable again. I was looking at a broncoII and remembered that I was a member here, and that there was a broncoII section, so I asked for some input on the thing. I am not going to buy it. I think I should spend the $ on the one I already "own" instead.
I got it fired up today, with a jumpstart, and took it for a ride real quick. That frikkin engine just purrs. It has 127k on the clock too. The SES light is on, and if I recall, it came on as my wife was driving it, right before we put it in time out for 6 months or whatever. I had the codes read at autozone, and am 99% sure they were O2 sensor-related.
Anyways, I've talked with a shop that will rebuild the tranny. I told him how it shifts hard, how it winds out gears waaay longer than it should, hot it bangs hard sometimes, and sticks on deceleration. He said they would just tear it down and replace what needs to be replaced. He said that worst case, if everything inside is shot, it will be around $2200. Does that sound about right?
I can do the 4WDCM swap myself, I just need to make sure I am getting the right replacement unit, right?
I am no ford tech, I have no diagnostic equip, and know very little...scratch that...NOTHING about the electronics/computer/PCM in this X.
I am considering having him fix the SES light issue too, after hearing what he says about what it will take to fix. I can't see dropping better than a deuce on a vehicle I should have never bought in the first place, only to have it fail inspection for a SES light. Instant fail here if the light is on.
Ok, don't laugh...am I stupid for thinking all of this is a good idea?
