So has anyone had a growling/groaning/grinding noise when both coming to a stop, and taking off from a dead stop? The best way to describe it is my car makes the noise that kid in the grudge movie makes...not the cat crying, the growling noise. What the heck?!

Any input would be good

Brake pads worn out?

check your brake fluid

brand new brakes...its not the brakes I am 100% sure. This sounds almost like shocks or springs creaking. I did the cheesy little Autozone troubleshooter and it suggests my pinion bearings. thoughts?

Well, your Explorer is at least 25 years old, so old. It could be any number of things; shocks, shock bushings, springs, pivot bushings, sway bar bushings, radius arm bushings, loose bolts, etc. Get under there while a friend or two are pushing the suspension up and down and see what's making the noise. Spray individual parts with silicone lube and see if it goes away. When you find the culprit, replace. Report back.
