My Explorer DIED!!

...

Hey,
Would I not hear a pretty big Snap or Bang or Pop... If a shaft broke? Mabye it was just real quiet. I did not hear any strange noises though and I was not doing any hard wheeling at the time.

My RPM's do change a little when I switch from P to any gear. It does not make any noises in gear though, even if I rev the motor up... The only noise that I can get out of it is when I Switch from a Gear to Park, and even then, it doesnt do it everytime?

Thanks,
Kendal

It bwas just a thought.

is your truck still out on the trail after all of this?

...

Yea,...I hope it doesnt end up being the output shaft...

namitey... Yes my truck is still stranded ontop of this mountain! I think im going to have to go buy a come-a-long and work it down the trail!
I had a buddy try to go up the trail today and he couldnt get over the first few hills... Mabye after all of this mud/snow dries up then someone can make it up there...

It's killing me to not have my car though!

Oh man that sucks, i cant imagine leaving my truck out on the trail.

Why don'y you get one of the guys that was up there with you when your rig broke to go back up and pull you back home. It doesn't sound like your truck is too far from your house, since you have already made several trips. Is it too muddy for them to go back?

You might look up OperaHouse. He knows alot about trannys, he has done several of his own rebuilds. He might be able to troubleshoot it for you.

It might be something in your transfer case since you said it was making strange noises, and you can't seem to get it out of 4low. Maybe you could put it in N and try to rock it will your trying to turn the shaft. You may want to use some large vice grips though, (small pliers probably won't do).

Yea, I was sorta making my own trail up the side of this moutain. I've been up and down it a few times but i ended up braking down the last time i went up. There is a service road that comes to within a half mile of my car. I've been riding with buddies up the service road and then hiked about .5 mile.

I have used a large set of vice grips to try and switch from L to N.. but the shaft must turn 180 or so degrees before it will stay on the N position. My problem is there is not enough room to attach the Vice grips and rotate the shaft far enough before they start hitting the underside of my body (on the car).

My front tires are dropped in this 1.5 ft. wide run-off ditch so, I cannot rock my car any...
I will give OperaHouse a PM and see what he has to say.

Namitey... yea, I really hate leaving my car up there, but there isnt alot that I can do until i get another rig up there to pull my front tires out of this small ditch.

peace...

Man that really sucks, ive yet to get my self into that situation. *knock on wood*

Im thinking that it must have something to do with the t-case. If that was still in good operating condition, and the problem was in the transmission, then you should be able to shift gears manually.

What model of t-case does the explorer use anyways?

...

I'm still stuck up there!

Suspect transfer case

When you switch from p to d , the tick you hear is the parking pall (a spring clasp type lock) trying to lock your tranny in park but since it was in gear it is now spinning, hence tic,tic tick.Since this is happening you know a few good things and sorry a bad. The good is that you still have a good engine, and tranny but your transfer case must have snapped the chain. The reason you wouldn't have heard this snap, is that, it is inside of an oil filled case with thick walls, heavy insulation! You may have also snapped a gear which the chain rides on , one way to tell is to find the oil drain plug for the transfer case and remove it, you are looking for metal as evidence. It is possible to R&R a transfer case in the woods but very very difficult and not reccomended by me. Before assuming I am correct, try shifting the transfer case from low to high, now go under and verify the linkage has swithced from L to H. I hope its not the chain , good luck . Also get yourself a haines repair manual and read up, who knows you may have a removeable pan cover to access the chain!!!!!!:)

Its not really worth it to rebuild an explorer t-case from what i hear. if you snapped the chain youre prolly better off getting a used t-case from a junkyard. when the tod clutch went in my truck i got a bw 1354 manual shift for it... best mod ive ever done.

Hey yall,

I finally got towed down the mountain by a buddy of mine, but my car is still at the base of the "trail" on the side of the road. I had the shifter motor off and I ****ed it from L to 2wd to make sure the motor was good, and it ****ed fine. So I held the motor up to the back of the tcase..and shifted it from L to 2wd and it shifted into 2wd, but i still could not go anywhere.

Does that still sound like the chain in the tcase? I will inspect it tommorow for any metal shavings.

Thanks for all the tips,

kendal

I think it was AlaskaJack who recently snapped his output shaft. That could be a possibility....

Can't you just drag it on home where it would be easier to work on. It must be pretty close. Just start it up for brakes, turn on the flashers, put in N and let someone pull ya.

One quick fix may just make it 2wd. Remove the t-case, and slip in a 2wd tranny output and driveshaft. Scrounge the junkyards for a t-case, or possibly rebuild yours.

I thought of doing that when i blew my t-case you'll need more than just the extension housing youll need the driveshaft as well. And even then i wanna say its not as simple as swapping the extension housing and driveshaft. i think there might be more to it.

UPDATE.. My transfer case is SHOT!

I got a few prices on tcases... 350 for a used one...550 for a rebuilt one w/ 90 day warranty... 1500+ for a new one...

OR

200 bucks for a manual shift BW1354..

I need to verify something before i decide what to do. I plan on (over the summer) putting a 302 w/ a 4r70W tranny.. Is there an adaptor that can link up the 4r70w and the 1354 tcase? Will it be strong enough behind a mildly built 302 (bored to 306)?

If so, then im going to go buy the 1354 tcase tommorow and i should have a good weekend project. Also, I have a full center console, so I am going to redo the Shifter so that it will come out of the drivers side of my console.

Any tips or suggestions that anyone has will be greatly appriciated. I plan on taking alot of pics and will post my results once everything is completed...

Thanks for all the help everyone has given me,

kendal

AA sells an adapter for your transmission to bolt a 1354 up to the v8 transmission. i would think a 1354 would be able to handle a v8 depending on what size tires/ gears etc youre running.
