i bought a 1000miles barely used K&N FIPK a few months ago, but it turns out that it was for SOHC exs while my truck is ohv.
so i decided only to use the filter and put the hose aside, but for some reason whenever i install the filter, my car becomes very hesitant and jerky and backfires a lot.
so i thought i better clean it, i bought a K&N filter recharger, washed the filter and sprayed it with oil and it became as new, but that also didnt help !

Any ideas ?

P.S: all gaskets were fitted properly, everything was done step by step according to the K&N guide dozens of times.

Did you lay the filter on newspaper to wick some of the oil out after recharging? Too much oil fouls the MAF sensor. Clean your MAF.

That^ and since the K&N allows more air flow, you'd be good to disconnect the negative batt. cable let the computer reset so it adjusts to the new efficiency in airflow better.

yeah i disconnected the negative cable for a bit everytime i tried installing the filter .

My MAF is only a few months old ... i doubt there is something wrong with it cause it works fine with the stock filter (which is quite busted).

And i tried the K&N filter with and without the recharging oil, and got the same results !

The oil from the K&N atomizes off the filter and fouls the filament on the MAF. But if you are positive nothing is wrong with your MAF and that atomized oil from the K&N didn't foul the filament which happens a lot, ditch the K&N. It's creating more hassle than it's worth anyway.

Ford didnt do too bad on the intakes for rangers, BKo, ex's, and bII's. leave it as is.

I know this not the same car but I had the same problem my Nissan. I'm thinking that either one you have your spark wires miss matched even though I don't know how, you have a crack or leak in your intake (sucking in air that isn't getting measure), also I change my fuel filter and checked the connection to the MAF.

I had a k&n on my escort (I know I know) and it did the same thing to it. Want to sell?????:thumbsup:

What brand? It may not be putting out correct signal. Try cleaning it though too.
It could be your IAC is at it's limits due to other issues, and when you free up the air, it can't react. Try cleaning the throttle body, IAC, and make sure there are no loose vacuum hoses. And be sure to reset your computer - disconnect battery for a few minutes.

The stock air intake system is a joke compared to aftermarket ones.

no lie! especially with the silencer... i bought a k&n drop in and havent had a dark day with it... i also swiss-cheesed my airbox and removed the silencer....when you nail it from a rol you get a nice ...."chuWAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" haha :D

Hey Pat, what is the "silencer"...on the airbox? I've never thought about "swiss-cheesing" the airbox...SOUNDS like a good idea, but you know how that goes...we've ALL had good ideas, hehe. Is it a good mod?

yeah what ^he^ said....:thumbdwn:good mod?

there is a restricter plate in the front of the airbox, and in that there is a little cylinder that which the intake breathes through.... it "silences" all the intake noises but its basically like your engine breathing through a straw. what i did was take a dremel, and cut a large opening in it after taking out the silencer and restricter plate.. i think its the cheapest way to go on a high-flow setup without spending 300 bucks for a mac.. ill go take a pic in a feww

heres a bad pic from the inside of the airbox looking towards the front... the hole on the right is factory and on the left is the dremel....... i didnt to too much cutting, so im sure it could be even louder.. any gains? .. id like to think so.. i cant really notice but maybe im crazy cause if you think more air to engine=more power? right. so i guess it has to have done something..

Well now my car got completely screwed up, even after i put back the original airfilter, the car is horribly sluggish. when im on a traffic light it takes the car around 10 seconds just to start moving and it backfires a lot.

i cleaned the MAF sensor, checked the hoses, checked for broken/loose gaskets, disconnected the battery a few million times and nothing works.

i also did the cutting of the stock box but only on the forward facing side and now the intake air temp stays the same as the outside air temp at the sensor wish is about 20 degrees cooler on aveage for what my temps were running.

oh and btw, make sure when you cut it, that it is BELOW your filter... otherwise you might as well run straight off the mas

You must have yanked a vacuum hose off, knocked a sensor or connector loose during the original installation. I dropped my K&N in with 50,000 miles on the Ex, and haven't had an issue since... that was 100,0000 miles ago...

the X's, rangers, and bII's are not similar, of not the same as broncos or mustangs? the 5.0 motors have perfect intake systems stock. you could only really get a better filter.

maybe i am mistaken?
