I bought my 99 XL last year with 120,000 mi and lately it has no power to accelerate and seems to bog down when I hit 3000rpm. This is true even if I put it in nuetral and try to rev it! Is there a restriction in the gas? Maybe the fuel pump(I thought I heard a whining a couple of times after reving in nuetral)? Or maybe the transmission (please no!!). I have also noticed that on steep inclines going down that if I manually shift into a lower gear to save brakes that the transmission does not down shift. Any thoughts on any of this my fellow explorers?

Have you had a diagnostic scan to test the O2 sensors? How is the fuel pressure? When was the fuel filter last xhanged?

Go to Autozone and get the free diagnostic test. My friends Mustang had the same problem. Ended up being a couple of $10 sensors and a dirty air filter.

I will chk out autozone....and chk the air filter...the fuel filter is probably dirty also. I will try these things and let you know what happens. I have never had any diagnostic chks.

Well I rudely never got back to you with the problem solver. It was a loose wire to the fuel pump. At least thats what my mechanic said. It cost $240 to find that out. He initially said it was the fuel pump and was going to replace! Thanks for your help.

It could be in the MAF. Try cleaning that out. It wouldn't be in the transmission if it happens in neutral as well. It's a fuel system or intake problem.

Do you clean that with just an can of compressed air?
