my explorer headache

First off i want to say hello to everyone im new here glad to come across this site. My question is i have a 96 ford explorer 2wd that needed a transmission so i went to warford auto parts that had one with 30k miles on it come to find out that the trans came out of a 97 and did not shift right when i got it in only 1st gear so i called them back and told them that my computer doesnt resgister the trans because of the wrong year. they told me that they been in business for 30yrs (which mean nothing to me) and said i would have to swich out the nose cone with the speed sensor for my original that doesnt have it and it should be ok. So im wondering if there is any truth to this
