Have you visited your dealer to check it out, WOLFexplorer? I can help by setting up a call from your regional customer service manager. For me to do this, please shoot me a PM with your full name, VIN, mileage, best daytime phone number, and dealer info.

hottdogg,

I see you were in touch with Jen today; she scheduled you a follow-up call. Don’t hesitate to send me any details you want forwarded before then.

Cory

Im gonna mention it when i bring it in for an oil change soon. Do you still want to call them? or wait until what they say when I bring it in?

Cory thanks for all your help, just waiting to here what kind of discount the dealer is offering.

To be clear, when I said the dealer wanted $800, that wasn't just parts. They said it'd be $600+ for the part and $200-something in labor.

Get them to detail what part they're suggesting and ask what the part number is for the relay/control module. The exploded diagrams I've found show it as a separate part, but without a part number.

The Explorer is at the dealership, they did the updates and turns out it needs a cooling fan. $277 installed. Picking it up tomorrow!

I guess that means you have exceeded the mileage for the factory warranty. That installed price is quite a bit different than what TrenchFoot posted. The Explorer has 2 cooling fans but I'm not sure if they are mounted in a single unit or separately. Are they replacing both or just one?

I will know more tomorrow, I was on the backhoe dealing with a water leak when he called so I didnt have time to chat.

Wow, after a trip to the dealer like that I suggest you buy a couple lottery tickets!

just took my 2011 explorer to shop to see why it overheats when ac is on. Turned out to be electric fans need to be replaced. Had it done for free since it was still under factory warranty.

Thanks to Cory or Crystal. not sure who i talking too for your help

This is what I like to hear, WOLFexplorer! I'm glad to hear everything worked out.

Glad I found this thread. I am having the same issue. I just called the dealer to ask "if my cooling fan was the issue (after explaining my symptoms) what would it cost"...after making me feel like an ass with the tone of his response, He said it would be around $900 most likely....

I hope this is not the case as my warranty is up, and that seems steep!

Was there ever a recall issued, or just the TSB?

Welcome to the Forum BIG EYE.:wavey:
To my knowledge, there was no recall issued on the cooling fans only a TSB and a TSB is only good for no cost repairs while the vehicle is under the factory warranty.
In looking at the Fordparts website, they list the cost of the "Engine cooling fan and motor assembly", part 8C607 as being $448.78.
If you want to look at the 'positive' side, that is less than the ESP would have cost you.
I assume we will be seeing more and more of this type of 'user pay' posts now that the early models are coming out of warranty. Being that it was a redesigned model is why I and many others opted for the extended warranty.
Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Order the part through Automation. The are a vendor on many forums and sell at 10% over cost. They sell it for $252.48. I am assuming 2-3 hours of labor so $500-$600 in total with you supplying the part.

Thanks for the info guys!
The service rep told me he tried to get it covered under warranty since it was just up a few thousand miles ago, but was unsuccessful (lying or not, the gesture was nice).
Although he was unsuccessful, he is taking 50% off the labor cost and 10% off the parts so the total is going to be $385.

Seems somewhat reasonable. At the very least I figure it would cost me close to this to do it myself given my time and and cost for the parts.....

Can't really complain about that... like you said, cheapest you can get is $252 which I posted if you were going to do it yourself plus shipping. You would probably be looking at $30+/- for shipping so lets round to $285. So only $100 in labor isn't bad in my opinion being outside of warranty.

Well, add another 2011 Explorer to the list of over-heaters. While tied up in traffic on the Mass Pike due to an accident, temp gauge kept rising until Warning light came on. No vomiting though fortunately (wife or car).

Local dealer says "yup, it's the fan" and "we hope to have one by tomorrow". If all goes well I'll be back to being a happy guy with regards to my Explorer. Funny, it has 30,000 miles on it and this is the first instance of over heating that I'm aware of and it was a balmy 30* outside when it happened.

Good to hear that the dealer is looking after you. Did you have the Customer Satisfaction Program 12B36 done a while back? That was for reprogramming the control module to occasionally run the fans at a higher speed to prevent possible contamination of the fan motor contacts.
That program was done free of charge up to May 1, 2013.
