98' XLT
Hi everyone, my name is Chris, I'm buying my first explorer from my friend next week and need some help. Its a 98' XLT with 155,000 miles, it doesn't run, my friend said he was driving on the expressway and it just shut off all of a sudden. He assumes that the timing chain broke because the motor sounds different when you crank it. But from experience I've had motors sound like they have no compression because of a fuel delievery problem or ignition problem. Anyway, can anyone give me some insight so I can get this thing running and on the road.

Thanks!

can you hear the pump cycle when you turn the key on? also did you do a compression test?

Not yet, I have to do a compression test still and see if the pump cycles, do these trucks have a timing chain or timing belt, and how hard or easy is it to snap, is it common thing? Thanks

you are probably an "timing SOHC winner"... :-( lot's of posts. was a major issue with the cassettes, etc.

So basically I will need a new motor then?
