I just purchased a used '92 explorer (eddie bower package) last week and found that the overdrive is not engaging. Stupid me...I should have made sure this was all working, but I didn't really take it "out" to far from the dealer and am now screwed cause it is "as-is". Anyway, there is no O/D button that I can find anywhere. It does have an O/D location on the gear shifter panel, but I can be at 55 MPH in regular drive, move it to O/D and it does not shift into it. This can be really expensive on gas since I do drive alot...I was hoping really hoping that it will be an semi-easy fix, like maybe a wire lose or something like that....or even a lost O/D button somewhere. Other than that, it shifts in every other gear beautifully, it runs and looks great!! Could this be a trans problem? or computer? or something? Someone please help me!!! Brian.

Look on

www.atcdg.com and click on tech. Scan down to A4LD and read the TB about the valve screen. This will require dropping the pan. At that time, look for large metal sediment. A lot of metal indicates the OD clutch or planetary gear has snapped. If not it is probably the valve which you can clean. This is an easy transmission to work on and you shouldn't be afraid of it. Don't feel bad. I bought my '92 and it took me 6 months to find the OD didn't work. It really doesn't hurt the gas mileage that much.
