My sending unit is inoperative. How do I test, and replace it?

Hello, just wanted to introduce myself to the community and let everyone know that I live in VA and have driven Fords the majority of my life but never an Explorer. I just bought one for my daughter and I need to get some issues taken care of, one being the sending unit. The truck is a 99 XLT 4L SOHC 4DR 4x4 and I need to test the unit or possibly replace it. Is there instructions on testing the unit as well as replacement instructions?
