I recently bought a 2001 Ford Explorer XLT, and it's been the best running and smoothest running explorer I've ever had. Aside from a few minor problems, it's been amazing.

However when I was driving home tonight, I had the weirdest vehicle problem I've ever experienced. After using my left turn signal and turning it off again, the left turn signal light was on solidly. I also noticed a wisp of smoke coming from under the emergency lights button on the steering wheel. This happened a few more times, mostly after using the signal but sometimes randomly.

After a 20 minute stop at the store, it seemed to have stopped. I'm still pretty worried though. I know it was an electrical short of some kind, but I don't know the best way to get at it or find it.

Common problem, its the multi-function turn signal switch. It needs to be removed and cleaned, and re-greased. Or you can purchase a new one. There is a thread on how to do it, its an easy fix.

Basically over time the contacts become worn, and metal shavings mix in with the grease, thus causing a conductive mix which shorts out the turn signal circuit when activated, but not enough to blow the fuse.

Multifunction switch. I've yet to own a 2nd gen with one that wasn't dying or had issues.
