HOLA!!!

..... Newbie here,... needing a miracle. (Or so I thought a few minutes ago).

I was recently dealt (what I thought was) ... catastrophic transmission failure,..... but after reading a few posts here, (as well as deeper investigation of the vehicle itself), I've concluded that there may yet be hope. :D

"M-Kay,..... I was driving my '94 Eddie Bauer home from shopping... and my transmission started having trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd. After a pint of new fluid, it appeared to regain it's composure..... UNTIL I got a block from my house. THEN it felt like my brakes were locking up, and then releasing.

After driving around my cul-de-sac a few times, I determined that my tranny was slamming into reverse AS I WAS STILL IN O.D.!!

Well,..... now I have no reverse...... BUT, it feels and sounds like it's going into reverse, but it won't move.

ALSO,..... what i've just done before sitting down at this computer,..... is that I attempted to back up my truck into a nice spot in my back yard. BUT,... it won't back up, even in neutral. I put ONE rear wheel up on a hydraulic jack and it will spin forward, but locks up as if it's in PARK when I attempt to spin it backwards. :monkey:

Why in the blue Hell would it spin ONE way,..... but not the other,..... when it's in neutral? :frustrate

So,..... I'm thinking that there's an electric servo or something that's engaged, and won't let go. (I'm REALLY hoping for a quick and CHEAP fix, here). ;)

So,..... am I onto something, here..... or am I just running on my last brain cell? :p

..... I need to know, because I have a tool-box here... as well as a chainsaw and a hockey mask. :hammer:

(I intend to use ONE of these).

Please don't make me continue to drive my old 3/4-tom GMC.

I can't afford the gas. :(

I would start by pulling the pan and looking at whats in side big metal, slivers, pieces etc if you have pics that would be great sounds like you broke reverese band but could be alot of other internal damage and i hate to say it but if this is the case you will have to tear it down. you will probably get some better info but my 2 cents worth.

The low reverse band is cast iron. They are for all intents and purposes indestructable.

I am having trouble making sense on the symptoms... I agree dropping the pan may be a good start... and you could potentially have some transfer case issues too.

Thanks, guys....... haven't ruled out transfer case,.....but the real issue I have as of right now is this,.....

..... My truck appears to act as if in "Park" when it's in neutral. (Oh,..... will roll forward, just not back). Will not back up under it's own power, feels as if reverse is capable, but disrupted. (Locked)? Goes forward just fine.

..... Driving down the road, I can feel it "shift" (spontaneously) into reverse, and a split-second after it does, it acts as if I've stepped on the brakes. (I'm quite certain it's attempting to shift itself into reverse). There's no growling or grinding noise at all.

Now that I think about it,..... Hell, it could be attempting to shift into 4-low? (Not reverse)?

Perhaps the problem IS in the transfer case!

*Bangs head on keyboard* .............

..... *Scratching damned mosquito bites* ...

..... Okay, I just started the beast, and put it in 4-high, then 4-low. (It's still got one wheel off the ground). Nothing I do will "unlock" the wheel from moving in reverse. The wheel up on the jack will spin forward just fine in 2w, 4wh, 4wl,..... but it will NOT go backward,..... under it's own power, or by me spinning it by hand. It does NOT act as if it's tightening ,..... it feels like a ratchet: it "Locks" tight, as if in "Park" when I attempt to spin the wheel in reverse.

Something is locked up,.... and I believe it must be an electrical problem, not mechanical. (That's MY belief).

I tell ya what,.....

I HATE new cars. :fire:

America stopped building motor vehicles after 1976.

But I've had several new and HORDES of like-new junk over the last 15 years and this 1994 Explorer is the ONLY one that hasn't been a stinkin money-pit.

This Explorer has been the best damned motor vehicle I've ever owned. It accrued 200,000 miles before the front end needed repair. ($550.00). I LOVE $12.00 u-joints! :D

It has great oil pressure, and is mechanically sound after the spring maintenance I put into it, this year. I'd love to keep it around for another 100,000 or better. (I keep repainting over the rust, too..... I live in Michigan). The rust is minimal,..... I plan to keep it that way.

Two years ago, I bought a 2001 explorer. It was quite possibly the WORST money-pit I've ever has the displeasure to own.

It's great that this forum exists.

You guys rock. :D

I'm doubting electrical. One way clutches (Sprags) come to mind but I am not understanding how this could occur.... they operate based on application of clutches or bands....and I am equally unsure how this could produce your symptoms.

If it isn't a transfer case issue....and it may not be, this is starting to look like a pull the pan and hope... and/or rebuild issue.
