Ok I was driving and all of a sudden my explorer started slowing down just before I got home. It's a 96 xlt 4x4 4.0l. I managed to get it home but it felt like something was slipping. Here are all the issues. When I put it in reverse nothing happens, when I floor it in reverse it will lurch back once in a while but that's it. Also in reverse it will only rev up to about 2500, unlike park where it can rev up all the way. When I put it in neutral it's like it's in park because a friend and I tried to push it down the driveway and it wouldn't move it would bounce back and forth like it was in park still. When I put it in drive it revs up really high but it doesn't go too fast, that's how it was when I managed to get it home and I don't want to drive it anymore because I don't want to mess anything up. I don't know when the last tranny flush or anything was because I just got the explorer a few weeks ago. I checked the fluid and there was like a crusty residue at the top of the dipstick but there was enough fluid in there. Does anybody know what the problem could be because I would like to see if it's something I could fix before I take it to a shop. Thanks.

I forgot to mention it has 138000 km's on it.

Did you check the fluid level hot/engine running/trans in neutral on level ground? What color was the fluid and did it smell burn't. Did you have a CEL?

Yes I checked the fluid while it was hot/running/level and no there isn't a cel. It was in neutral but like I said it won't actually shift into neutral like I posted. The fluid didn't smell burnt but there was a crusty material on the top of the dipstick.

These transmissions have some weak points, such as the EPC solenoid, valve body gaskets, and loose valve body bolts. Start with checking the pressure with a 0-300 PSI transmission gauge. The next step would be to drop the pan, and see if the bolts are loose as well as check for fragments in the pan. This would indicate if there is any hard part damage.
