I'm a new member and thought I might explore if others have had this problem and at what mileage and so on. I have 120,000 miles on a '92 XLT 4X4. First the four wheel drive wouldn't engage, and then the trans failed. There wasn't any grinding or anything, it just stopped going forward and wouldn't make thge light "clunk" sound when the trans engages into gear. I think the reverse still worked, but its at a shop now for a rebuild. Does this sound early for a trans failure? It has been well maintained until the last 6 mos. or so, and I do not baby it. Its an auto trans. What's up?

Hey, welcome to the site and sorry to hear about your tranny. The good news(if you can call it that) is, that is about normal for an Explorer tranny. Most of them go out around that mileage. Mine went out at 114000 and it was babied it's whole life. Make sure you get a warranty on the rebuild as many of us have had recurring problems. Personally, mine has been back to the tranny shop 10 times since the first rebuild... In fact it is in there right now and I'm starting to have withdrawl symptoms...

As for your 4-wheel drive it's probably just a dirty shift motor which you can clean yourself. Search for "Four Wheel Drive not engaging" or something like that to get the many many threads that have been posted about it. I would tell you more but I have never had to do it so I'm not sure on the details.

Once again, welcome to the site and sorry to hear about your tranny.

120.....lucky. I only got 90 out of mine. Bad news though. It sounds like the same problem I had. The reason it won't go foward is becouse some of the gears may of smacked into each other. My reverse worked too. Have you got a quote yet. It's not cheap. Sorry.

I'd like to welcome you to the site though. Sorry you had to join on such a bad sign, but you will find everything you'll ever need to know all right here.

rebuild prices

Here's the rebuild cost rundown for my trans work. Take into consideration I live in St Louis, MO., labor is around $50/hr.

For the trans rebuild itself, the quote was $1050. The torque converter was $140 I think. It may be more if there are damaged hard parts.
I decided on a rebuild instead of having a factory rebuilt trans fitted for a few reasons. One was immediate cost. The rebuild comes with a 6 month warranty, and at half the cost a better deal than the rebuilt trans with I think a 1 yr warranty. I called around to shops and they weren't talking my language, especially AAMCO (forget it). So, I decided on the rebuild. The guy at the rebuild shop said he had too many problems with the factory units and they often did't mesh well with the car.
I bought the car from the bank that leased it to my dad, so I knew the history and so on, and I have about a year left before I'm done paying for it. I have put major miles on it over the last two years (almost 40,000 total), and when I'm done paying for it I'll probably drive it into the ground while trying to keep it alive.
How do these prices sound?

I have 170,000 miles on my A4LD. It's a good tranny if put together right - albeit a lightweight one.

I hate to tell you, but MOST shops don't know how to work on an A4LD, despite what they tell you. I don't know where my next tranny will come from - I'm still looking.

I know Jasper Engines sells one for $2300 - they have a good reputation on engines, but I don't know about trannies.

Maintanence Tips
- change your fluid and filter every 15,000 miles. You'll only get 4 or 5 quarts out by pulling the pan, but don't worry about it as long as you change the fluid regularly.

- Use a high grade fluid (synthetic is good - I use Valvoline Durablend).

- Use a good filter - a Wix is the best one I have found (it has more filtering surface area than stock).

- do not ever let the tranny get hot. Install a temp gauge. If the temp gets to 200 degrees, stop the truck, shut down the engine, let it cool.
