I found a relay box box in the luggage compartment in the driver side wheel well . I can't seem to get any information about it in my search. I found it while trying to fix my brake lights that just stopped functioning . Any help is greatly appreciated

If you are talking about the one that is in the spare tire jack location then that one is one for the remote access key fob and security box. If you are talking about the one on the passenger side, there is a module just refereed to as REM (rear electronics module) that basically handles all the functions of the rear lights and hatch.

Well the one with the jack was the one I was questioning about. Apparently it handles my brake lights. I took the four or five relays out one at a time and used a brass brush to clean the contacts and also the contact points on the box, doing so got my lights to working. Ill look on the otherside now for that keyless entry box you mentioned. I bought this Explorer for a mere $400 , so there's no telling what I need to fix lol. Thanks for the information,

Interesting. I'm going have to look for this box in mine!

Considering that it is an XLS, does it have the keyless entry door touchpad? If not then you might not have the Remote Access Personality (RAP) module aka keyless entry box.

I do know there isn't a keypad. As for keyless entry I'm not sure. I got this car without much history known. I was going to find a build sheet on it. Finding one has proving to be difficult.
I looked on opposite side (passenger) and there isn't anything behind the panel. However I'm about to install a 4k watt sound system in the car. So if theres anything hiding im sure to find it when I run the cables.

XLS isn't likely to have more than the base radio, so no amp behind passenger rear quarter panel.

Without a keypad on the door, yeah you probably don't have a RAP module at all.

This will seem like an odd question, but do your backup lights work?
