My 91 has been making this noise since i got it. Sounds almost like a minor valve tap. A mechanic had said that it was just an accessory noise. Well I proved that wrong when I ran the truck without the serpintine belt. (this was done to see if it in fact was just an accessory noise.) IT is definately in the top end of the motor. I am told that lifters would be pretty loud and this isnt too bad. Its just making me insane. Maybe a rocker? If it is a rocker any idea if they make a better one (roller)

it could very well be a lifter, so maybe too little engine oil or a bad lifter? just a thought.......

My '92 has a tapping noise also. It's one of my injectors. you might look there for the noise. Eric P

The OHV 4.0 tends to have a bunch of little noises, especially when they get older. Most of the time it's not a big deal and just a little annoying. You could tear down the motor to find it, but most likely it won't hurt anything and you may just be losing a horse or two.

You can probably rule out an injector noise by using a mechanics stethoscope to listen to each one individually (this is a method for verifying that they are all working). You could probably isolate the source of the noise with the stethoscope but obviously won't be able to place it on a lifter if that is the problem.

A stethoscope isnt very expensive: http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=4879

THanks. I didnt even think if the stethascope idea. It isnt terrible at all just a little annoying.
