Hi Guys, need a little help on this one. I have a 2004 Ford Explorer V8 Limited Edition with the infamous harsh shift into reverse and sometimes drive, however, the clunk or hard shift into drive is not as bad as when shifted into reverse. As tranny heats up the shift is worse and worse, but when i start the truck off of a cold start, you can barley notice it. I dropped the pan and noticed that the fluid was very dirty and also noticed a mud like material kinda clayish on the magnet and on the filter housing. I also noticed that the reverse servo's screen had a tear in it can someone shed some light as to why the screen has a hole in it and if this could cause my hard shift and what the claylike material is coming from. I put it back together with a new filter and 7 quarts of Marcon-5 and it's doing the same exact thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The screen is there to keep debris out of a valve that is in the lower portion of the housing, I have seen them torn and even missing before without any problems to the valve.

Harsh engagements on this transmission could be from problems with the solenoid block. They are known for issues like this.

The clayish material in the pan could be clutch material from the bands or clutches. Its common for the reverse band to lose its lining over time.
