Hi guys I want to modify my truck to go in water a little bit. I have a 1992 Explorer 4.0 ..First i want to put a new exhaust system on it with a Y-pipe at the end so i could cap the muffler and uncap the other Y pipe end to bolt on an exhaust tube thats long enough to go up at the height ot the truck roof to be sure no water enter there. Second I need to know how can i do a snorkel to be sure again that theres no water in the intake system. Finally i gave to change the front U joint but the clips retaining them are soldered in place due to rust....anyway ever had this problem and how you solved it.
Thank you for your help and btw guys who just have negative comments dont take your times to post here I need real help.

Cya guys

do a search for snorkel and you can probalby use alot of penetrating fluid or a torch on the u-joints but im not to sure as I dont have to deal with rust down here.

negative comments? don't think you can even get these on this forum...

snorkel is not something that would be easy - they don't make snorkels for Explorers - people have made their own stuff or adapted from other vehicles - I believe there is one from a Toyota that fits with slight mods. Exhaust? that would be easy, just need a pipe bender and 2.25" pipe. As for the u-joints - get a ball joint, u-joint c-frame press - (you can rent one) and for the clips, well, try to use a torch on them but if you don't have a torch, WD40 or some other solvent should help you. I just replaced ball joints and u-joints on a pretty rusty 91 "X" and had no problem removing them. Good luck!

the clips are easy, I use a punch and drive it around untill it hits the stop, then just keep on hitting until it pops off. It will work because its worked on 1979 ford front shafts that were so rusted I could hardly see them.

I would say dont worry about the exhaust, I never heard of it being done before and I know plenty of people who routinely bury their trucks in mud/water with no issues.

Snorkel, do a search cause its be covered quite a few times.

So I take it you gave up on the 2wd swap?

Where i am in the north right now theres snowmobiles thats sank in he lake near the beach ...thats why i want asnorkel and modified exhaust..to tow them :)

You can also relocate the computer so it wont be so close to the floor and risk getting wet.

not everywhere and the stupid guys where drunk..so their lost..my gain ;)

if u have the ball joint press u can just press them out with the clips in place .
they will break apart no matter how much rust is on them
a ball joint press is very usefull for other things other then just pressing ball joints, i bought mine 8 years ago for the same price it would have cost me to have a shop do them, so i got to buy the tool an iv used it for many other jobs sence well worth having

Even with a press I had to use a cutting disk to get my c-clips off.

You don't need an exhaust snorkel, as long as you don't cut off the engine with the exhaust pipe under water. If for whatever reason you want to be able to cut off the engine, just weld a piece of pipe off the tail pipe, that goes up the back corner of the truck to the roof.

You should relocate your computer behind the glove box. It's easy, and once, before I relocated mine, I went from stuck to very stuck when I got stuck in a river, and 2 min. later, still not out, enough water leaked into my truck to hit the computer and stall out the truck. Water never got high enough to hit the glove box.

Don't forget to extend all of your breather hoses. Axles, Transmission, & Transfer Case. I have mine extended into the cab and hidden behind the trim pieces up to the roof. Also, if your going to be in water often, you should run full synthetic in your axles, t-case, and tranny. They will hold up better if any water does get in.

There are several threads on hear about building a snorkel. If you have any specific questions, pm me.

How'd you run the snorkel into the fender and airbox? I'm looking to put one on my ex next.

use a search feature... best bet... it has been done before. I've seen some redneck snorkels and I've seen some professional ones addopted from other vehicles.

Mine only cost ~$130 to build, and that's because I paid $100 for the ARB 'cap' and I think it looks very professional.

After using the search function:

Mine is almost identical to the third one, Con Seann3ry 's, but everyone is going to use slightly different methods/ideas.
