i have a 96 ranger has auto locking hubs problem is i thought the axle u-joints where bad cus when i put it in 4 wheel drive it made all kinds of crunching noises well a friend told me to check the hubs first he had an explorer he said he had nothing but trouble with them so i took offthe wheel and then the hub when i took the hub off the pass side the cam ass fell apart so my question is i bought a used set of manual lock outs pretty cheap what all do i need i got the hubs and he gave me the lock nuts are there any washers or spacers from the the auto stuff i need?

None of the auto hub stuff gets reused for the manual hubs.
There's 3 pieces per side that you need for the manuals, two spindle nuts and a washer that goes between them.

Welcome to the forum.

thanks then i do have everything guess i know what i'll be doing this weekend and hopefully it fixes all the noise's then i'll be wanting it to snow more.....lol and i'm glad i found this forum alot of interesting ideas just wish parts where alittle cheaper here btw nice ranger hopefully i get mine looking like that

Lol the auto hubs are junk! I had one auto and one manual on my 92 when I bought it, i was like wtf? haha

thanks went to auto zone they had the socket for the manual lock nuts doesn't look like the one in the pic, just has the four tabs sticking out at the end they couldnt find the torque specs they're idiots around here sometimes i know more than they do lol but also they said they didnt have the socket for the auto hubs so i'll try and use a crescent wrench but thanks for all the help one more quick one do i need to put the snap ring and washers back on at the end of the shaft or do i throw them out too?

think i bought a lemon......lol

ok just finished putting manual lock outs on guess that was a stupid question to ask about the snap ring since there isn't one stupidity one my part sorry now is it common for them to pull to one side or do i have another issue going on only does it when i lock the hubs in and it makes a clunking sound i figure the sound is a bad u-joint

There SHOULD be a star washer and a C-clip on the end of the axleshaft, is that what you're talking about? Cuz they really need to be there...

yea have both and put them back on. sorry first 2nd gen i've owned i have a couple 1st gen and a b11 first time i've dealt with a auto to manual conversion on a ranger but i love the rangers had an 89 with a 2.9 5 speed and had to pull my buddies chevy 1 ton and trailer off the road when his fuel pump went out pissed him off and he still denies today but anyways yes c clip and washers went back on

Might want to turn the hub up side down and pour some automatic transmission fluid and let it soak for a few minutes. This will let that baby work flawlessly. I've done this to mine also.

Or pull it apart and change/clean the bearing.
