i'm am swapping trannys right now and i just notice the only differance is the shifter linkage. i'm putting in a tranny that was rebuild to 4.0 spec. and was install in my 88ranger.but now i need to switch the shifter lever from the explorer in to the ranger tranny.as the ranger has the lever going straight up

and the explorer is pointing straight down
(dead links)

what is involved in switching them over.

thanks james

It should unbolt off..

BTW from the looks of things, this is for your 94 Explorer right (no TRS/TPS) ?

Check to make sure the gear positions are all the same once you flip the lever - cauz tecnically, flippign the lever to the other side should reverse the shift order according to the in-cab shift lever.

i can get and unbolt the short lever off for the kick down cable but its the shifter lever(long one) i'm having problems with.

it should be ok if i remember right on the ranger the shifter cable came form the front of the tranny not like the exp. coming from the rear. so flipping the lever from top to pointing to the bottom will be ok.

thanks james

Yeah its a pain - but put some muscle into it and it will come off. The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) was very difficult to get off of mine. It even broke and so I had to buy another TRS.

What I'm saying is that the transmission might not agree with what it says on your dash. In other words, once flipped, your [P]ark might be at the other end of the shift range.

thanks for all the no help guys except for IZwack. :frustrate

i finally did figure it out there is a 13/16 nut that has to be undone that you can get acess by removing the oil pan. then there is a lock pin that needs to be removed that runs up from the mounting face of the pan flange thats hold the shifter shaft in place.
it was easier to do today then at 10:30 last night. :banghead: :can:
