Need Help determining what is wrong with my 98 explorer xlt

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer V8, Auto Trans. with 66,500 miles on it. Recently when I put it into reverse it will jerk back and forth and sputter and than shut off and every time I would go to put it into reverse it would do the same and shut off. I have replaced the Fuel filter and have also used Injector cleaner. What can it be now? Thank you.

What about drive?

Does it do the same thing if you quickly go past Reverse to Neutral and then select Drive?

Are there any Diagnostic Trouble Codes getting set?

Could be a problem with the torque converter clutch/solenoid. Agree with Dale. Get it checked for any codes.

So far it only does it when I go to put it in Reverse. Today it did it a few times till I was able to get it out of the driveway and ran sluggish. It also stalled out when I hit a bump tonight.
