1997 Mercury Mountaineer
i have a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer...i bought it like 4 months ago and it had been running fine except when the fuel pump broke....but to get to the point...one day parked my mountaineer in the driveway...and about 3 hours later...i went back out to go get my brother from school...and when i put it into reverse...it made like a popping sound...and then when i started to go in reverse the car started to jerk and shake and clunk..and scared the crap out of me...ever since then i havent driven the car except to see if the prob. has been fixed..but guess what it hasnt...it has only gotten worse now it wont even move in reverse unless i get the rpms to like 2800...but the drive gears work just fine...it runs great when moving forward.lol...i really need my car to get to school and back...and i dont know what could be wrong with it...maybe the transmission or maybe the rear transfer case, or even maybe the brakes...but i checked my brakes and there is still plenty of pad left on them...so if ne one can help me with situation i would greatly appreciate it...thnx..

You only have one tranfer case. And that's not the problem. The brakes also aren't a main suspect. Either there is a problem withthe reverse band selecting reverse or the linkage isn't moving it enough to fully select it. I wouldn't rev it until it goes into reverse, I just wouldn't use it. What's the trans fluid look like?

check the tranny and all the diffs to make sure they all have fluid...thats all i can think of...i am sure some one else will see this who has more knowledge than me. Godd Luck

the tranny fluid is a redish orange color...so i just need to find a straight road and reverse it till that stuff stops

NO. You certainly can't fix the problem by just continuing to drive in reverse. You may in fact smoke the tranny while you are at it. You need to take it to a shop, and have them diagnose the problem.

how do i check the differential fluid?

There should be a plug that the gear oil should be up to. You fill it until it's full to the hole.

Also with the having to rev it to get it to go into reverse makes me suspect that you might be low on tranny fluid... You need to check the level of the tranny with the truck running, let it warm up first, then check the fluid level... If its low you'll need to add fluid... If that is the problem that should clear it up, unless you've already hosed the tranny... You might want to take it to a shop for a professional diagnosis...

How do i check the gear oil....where is the plug at...totally confused...sorry! :(

No problem. Get under the truck and take a good look at the diff. There should be a small plug in it over halfway up. If you want I could probably snap a pic, and upload it after work tomorrow.

yea if you can take a pic. that would be great...thanks mbrooks420...

It is the squarish plug in the middle of the pic. It is on the drivers side looking through the a arm

how do i get the plug out?..thnx for the pic.

sorry...confused once again...is the plug the one that looks like a bolt or the one with the square hole in the middle of it?

Take a measurement from the outside edge of your left back tire to the outside edge of your right back tire. Divide that number by 2 and then measure in from the ouside edge of either tire that distance and you will find the pumpkin.
