2004 Sport Trac XLT 4WD
I am trying to help a friend with a ford explorer sport trac XLT that he just purchased. Toward the back of the fuel rail on the passengers side there are 2 vacuum lines that are not connected to anything, and I cannot find where they go. There is a gray connector near the fire wall that has 1 line going in and 2 lines coming out. It is the 2 lines coming out that are not connected to anything. Does anyone know where these go? The lines seem to have an exhaust type gas coming out of them. Plugging the lines has no impact on the motor as far as I can tell. I thought maybe an evap canister or something?

I forgot to mention it is a 2004 Sport Trac XLT 4.0 Automatic.

Does anyone have an 04 Sport Trac V6 that they could take some pictures of to help me identify where the lines go? I am looking at the area below and to the right of the PCM. The area that is at the very back of the passengers side fuel rail. I cannot find pictures of it anywhere,

Thank you.

I'm having trouble getting oriented on that but I also have a Job1 motor. Anyone else able to help?

Edit: you may get more help if this question is in the Under the Hood subforum.

are you showing a hose that has nothing plugged in both ends?
you may want to take a wider angle picture

I will try and take a wider angle picture tomorrow in the daylight. But yes I am looking for whatever connects to the two pieces of hose. At the back of the passengers side fuel rail (But not attached to it) there is a gray piece that looks a valve of some kind maybe. It can be seen in the top two pictures. This valve has a single hose going into the back of it, and 2 hoses coming out the other side. It is these two hoses that are not connected to anything. I cannot see where the single hose that is attached goes, I can only feel it for a short distance between the motor and the firewall. Again I appreciate the help, I have tried to google a picture of the motor, but that area is not clear on any of the pictures.

Chris

Here are a couple more pictures. I can make them bigger if need be. (Figured out how to resize) : ) The gray fitting for reference is in the middle left of both pictures.

Most vehicles have a vacuum diagram/emission label on the underside of the hood. In the event that its missing the Ford dealership can provide you with a diagram but you will need to give them the VIN number.

This is what you are looking for....

I just ran out and checked my ST to be sure. There's no hoses or valve in that spot.
I just did my intake gaskets over the weekend. Didn't see anything like that.
No valve that looks like that either anywhere on our engines. Those hoses look new-ish. Someones been messing around in there. Just have to follow the single hose on the back of that valve somehow. Have someone move the stuff on the other side of the engine and watch that valve for movement. Or crawl under the truck maybe.
There is nothing between the firewall and intake manifold/valve covers. Just the PCV valve on the back of the drivers side valve cover, There is a vacuum connection on top of the intake manifold between the last two runners on the drivers side.. All the way towards the firewall. Good luck

Wrench and Mark thank you very much for the help and the quick responses. I am starting to wonder if this motor is out of a different year or make? Does anyone happen to know if there is another motor that would bolt on in place of the stock motor. I do not know how to trace a motor to a specific year/make/model or if it is even possible. I will do my best to try and trace the line back to it's source. I thought this was going to be a simple deal when I started. Maybe a mirror will help me see back there. From what I am reading the 03 and 04 ST should be basically the same under the hood which puts me at a total loss.

Thank you again for your help.

EDIT

Mark I just noticed that on your profile it says that you have a RWD. This ST is 4WD, I wonder if the part has something to do with the 4WD?

There generally is a casting number on the engine block, and if my memory serves me correctly its located near the driver's side motor mount. Ford can tell you by that casting number which years and models that engine was used in.
Unfortunately that is not likely going to help you. Emission controls and vacuum lines change from year to year and very by State/location, options, ect.
If your emission label does not show those vacuum lines then take them out and/or plug them.

Okay, I have more information about the missing component. The tube goes straight into the back of the motor. It looks like it's going into the lower part of the intake. The hose then connects to a PCV valve, the valve is stamped with Motorcraft # EV-147. Out of this PCV valve are the 2 hoses that are not connected to anything. Can anyone tell me where the hoses coming off this PCV valve are supposed to go??

Thank you for any help you can offer.

This Sport Trac has 3 PCV valves. I have the valve located on the drivers side valve cover, the valve located on the passengers side valve cover, and the third is the EV-147 located at the rear of the intake with the 2 hoses that are disconnected. It is this third PCV valve that I can find no mention of. The third valve is pictured above, it is the light gray piece with 2 disconnected hoses coming out of the top. Weird. The 2 valves in the valve cover I just got finished replacing.

Is it possible the intake is from a different vehicle, and that's why the third PCV is there that clearly doesn't belong?

Anyone ever seen this???

It looks to me like this intake is from a 2000 ford explorer based on this:

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=257622

I guess the best thing to do is to just plug the lines? It's strange that the car is not having any performance issues from this, and is not throwing a light. The intake in the linked pictures looks completely different then the one that is in the car now, but the one odd PCV and setup is identical.

I think you are right I had it backwards, its a job 1 motor with a job 2 intake. That was very helpful, thank you very much. This is the first Explorer I have ever worked on, and my experience with Ford's in general is limited. It has been... interesting so far. ;)
