Another A4LD would be the easiest, the later 4.0L units are a little stronger but they have left me walking too. The M5OD manual transmission is what I swapped into my aerostar van when the auto died.

Im trying to save some money though and a4ld is more exspencive than the truck lol. can i ask what all just had to do converting to a maual trans.

Manual transmission swap is pretty easy. I swapped pedals, added the clutch master cylinder, dropped the auto transmission, replaced the flex plate with a flywheel and clutch then bolted the manual transmission in its place. I used hydraulic line with AN style fittings for the clutch line. The m5od will bolt onto the same mount as the a4ld and your transfer case will swap over to the m5od. I found a transmission at a U pull it for $200, clutch parts/ flywheel was another $200, the pedals, master cylinder, manual trans wiring harness and several cases of beer put the grand total just under $600 and I've been very happy with it. What motor does your ranger have?

its a 2.9 v6 how much is to that wiring harness also do all vehicles come with a standard frame equiped with brackets for things like the master cylender and clutch pedal hook ups ?? Thanks for all the info man

The wiring harness is cheap $10-20 depending on the yard, it plugs into the main harness at the back of the engine. Ford made it simple, everything will swap right into your truck. the clutch master cylinder hole has a blank over it, just swap the entire brake pedal assembly from a manual. A 4.0L transmission will fit the 2.9L even one from the sohc. The 4.0L clutch is a nice upgrade too, 10 inch vs the 8 7/8 on the 2.9L. In the aerostar section I have posted some pictures of a transmission swap I've done. I swapped a mustang T5 into the last van. Current van I did the M5OD swap.
